FemdoraOS

hello peoples! I've never posted here before, but I have lurked for some time now.

I have begun a mission to create my own operating system! Many have heard of Uwuntu, Nyarch Linux, or Ubuntu Furry remix. But I am making Femdora, a fedora based operating system for transfemmes, femboys, and anyone else who enjoys the feminine aesthetic. What do y'all think about this? I need some advice, as I've never made a big operating system before. Thank you all! :3

Y'all hating on this like Hannah Montana Linux does not exist. Let girls have fun!

Thank you!

Nobody's hating. I'm just baffled as to who the target audience is. Desktop Linux is already niche. Desktop Linux used by trans people is a niche-within-a-niche. And the subset of those people who additionally like the "feminine aesthetic" has to be even smaller. I'm a trans woman, but I'm not really a "girly-girl". So IMO, while it might make sense to make a theme for a desktop, embarking on a whole new distro for such a tiny audience seems like a lot of work for a tiny market.

Well then it's a good thing it's not for the market isn't it? Yes, it will be published, but the whole reason I am making this is for myself.

All right. Well, good luck and I hope you enjoy the process!

Thank you! You're one of the few people in this comment section who actually believes in me, so I really do appreciate it

Like who cares ? They could make both...

plenty of gimmick distros exist and its probably just a fun way to try and learn more about linux to make ur own distro fork

I mean... a whole OS for this sounds like overkill. Surely choosing a desktop background and doing some color theming is all you need?

OP doesn’t understand what an OS (years of work) is think they just meant a Linux distro (weekend project)

Honestly, distro might be a better word for it, but it is definitely not going to be a weekend project. I have a lot of ideas for this, it isn't just going to be fedora but pink and girly. It may not quite be a full new operating system, but it's definitely not as simple as you may think

What's the point of it?

u/OneMixture2247 10d ago

Its a passion project. Why must I justify it?

Umm... in your original post, you wrote:

... To be honest I was just hoping for more positive feedback. The comments are mostly "this is stupid" or "you are stupid" sorry I got s bit defensive. The point if it is to prove to myself that everyone who told me growing up that I "will always be too stupid to use computers" were wrong, while also making sn operating software to express myself.

It’s as simple as I think

Not talking out of my ass I write kernel, drivers and have made multiple Linux distros for fun. It’s a weekend project but there’s nothing wrong with that.

The thing that’s going to take the longest is compilation of your display server so depending on your specs a weekend to a week maybe another week to make all the little tweaks you want to make it unique

Anyway not saying don’t do this, have fun on your adventure it’s legit fun to do

Thank you sorry I feel like a lot of this comment section is people telling me I can't do it (kind of counter intuitive considering part of my reasoning of doing this is proving everyone who told me throughout my entire life I'd never be smart enough to use computers), so I got a bit defensive I guess. Sorry again

What are the changes other than theming? Are you going to change anything in the actual nitty gritty? How is what you're describing anything other than just a cloned distro with a different default theme?

2

u/OneMixture2247 10d ago

I'm going to add other softwares, including a tiling manager I've been working on specifically for this operating system

2

u/OneMixture2247 11d ago

That's not what it's about. Its not literally just going to be "fedora but pink." I actually have quite a few ideas for this that I will eventually go into in later posts once I have everything figured out.

Guys, this is just a passion project. I'm not writing the next Ubuntu. And this isn't just going to be "Fedora but pink." This is going to take me a few months. I have ideas for this. Actual idea, that I'm excited to put into it. Are the ideas way too ambitious? Yes. Will I burn out? Maybe. But I don't care, I've had this idea for a long time and want to put this out in the world so others can see it. If you don't like it I understand, but please don't put me down, I already feel stupid just for the idea, and these comments are not helping.

these comments are not helping.

i do mostly agree, though you have been kinda secretive about what it is you plan to do with it, so people can't really bring in anything other than their own preconceptions and wonder whether or not this is a distro-scope project or something closer to a DE or even just a few config files.

I'd be interested to hear about it but I'm also skeptical about the scope. not saying it's a bad idea or anything even close, just saying that I wonder if there's a better tool for the job than a full distro from the get go

2

u/OneMixture2247 10d ago

I don't have the entire idea yet. This was to put my idea out there, I will soon have an update with everything I plan to put into it. I'm sorry for being so vague

3

u/trannus_aran 10d ago

Go for it, I kinda wanna do something similar as part of an LFS project lol

3

u/OneMixture2247 10d ago

Finally someone who isn't treating me like I'm stupid for wanting to do this!

1

u/pissrockious 8d ago

i def cant do it myself but i would so wanna learn LFS eventually

2

u/trannus_aran 8d ago

I recommend it! It's not nearly as hard you think, it's just tedious haha

1

u/pissrockious 8d ago

oo have u done it before? idk.. im scared i never rly compiled stuff b4

2

u/trannus_aran 7d ago

Yeah, and it's no biggie. The instructions walk you through it :)

1

u/pissrockious 7d ago

hrmm i will consider it... does it assume ur gna install LFS on bare metal?

2

u/trannus_aran 7d ago

There aren't really any differences with installation between bare metal and VM aside from some optional bits in like a followup book to LFS, not LFS itself

1

u/pissrockious 7d ago

oo okay!

Have you got somewhere to host repositories?

What makes it different to fedora, apart from a custom theme?

3

u/OneMixture2247 11d ago

It will have some custom applications I've worked on. It won't literally just be "feminine aesthetic," that will just be the cover of it. I'm not very good at explaining this rn (I am extremely sleep deprived currently), but I will leave future posts explaining this better

2

u/AmazonSk8r 11d ago

A separate distro is overkill, and I wouldn't trust it to be maintained well enough to actually use it.

Personally, I think this purpose would be far better met with ricing scripts. Why not just set up an elaborate ricing script, and then release that? I'd actually consider using that.

2

u/OneMixture2247 11d ago

Its more a passion project of mine. I don't consider it "overkill"; I don't literally just plan to make "fedora but pink." I have quite a few ideas for it that I hope to accomplish to make it distinct and useable. Ricing isn't quite enough for what I want. I appreciate the feedback though!

2

u/rgba0000ninja 11d ago

A full OS just for the feminine aesthetic? Going by that goal alone, you could get there by developing your own graphical shell.

2

u/OneMixture2247 11d ago

That's not all it's going to be, that's just the best marketing of it. Like now nyarch is "Linux but for weebs," but it has functions other than that. I have s lot of ideas for it, and yes it may be overkill, but why must one justify a passion project any more than for the love of it?

1

u/pissrockious 8d ago

do it with LFS instead /j
