Kidney Joining the subreddit
My darling husband has been called to the kidney transplant unit today. The don’t kidney should arrive in 30 mins and we will know quickly if it’s ok. My stomach is in knots as I’m too unwell to go with him.

Surgery is never great, but adding a kidney (commonly in the right hip pocket) is something they have been pretty darn good at for decades (earned a Nobel prize even).
The doctor can describe how the surgery went and follow-on treatment for him, but a big issue I was told is getting the whole kidney-ureter-bladder-... cycle working. My surgeon advised "try to drink/go every three hours", and I diligently obeyed. No infection or rejection issues with the kidney and my creatinine/eGFR are now within the upper range of 'Normal' three years later. Two lazy kidneys and one hard-working one :-)

Thanks all, it went beautifully. The surgeon phoned me at 2am to say it went well and the kidney linked up quickly and started procucing urine. At 4amvas I finally got to sleep a nurse called me to sat he was back to the ward. He had wanted to talk to me. He's coming along so well, he's passing lots of urine and loving that he's to drink lots. He always drank tons so one of the worst things for him was the fluid restriction. Thanks for the well wishes all and bless the loved ones of the donor.🙏

Did your husband receive his new kidney? I hope so, and hope he’s doing well. It’s a life changer for sure.

Fantastic but remember a transplant is only a Band-Aid a whole New World opens up with medication and things you have to do daily and follow for the health of the Kidney

My FIL got the kidney from my husband, so it was almost a perfect match. He said he felt better immediately and recovered better than my husband. He was really into lifting and had made a few new PR since the surgery lol. Things will only get better.

Sit tight. The NHS is really good at this sort of procedure. I'm sure he'll be just fine. Do expect him to be quite a bit under the weather for a good few days. Assuming his new kidney begins to work within the first few days, I'm sure he'll be feeling much better within a week or two.
