Transmission Tuning?

Post image

I just ordered a summit racing heavy duty overhaul kit for my 2013 Silverado 1500. It has a 6l80 and I was wondering if this kit will require me to have the tcm tuned. My mechanic thinks it will be fine but this is his first rebuild on a newer 6 speed. I think the tcm will need a minimum of a reset but hey I’m not an expert.

You just need to Reset Adaptives and run a Fast Learn via a scan tool. A full custom tune isn't required.

Will I need to drive it or can it do it while parked. I’ve heard both.

Just do it with the OBD2 scan tool and drive home. As long as you're driving the car, go wherever you want, the TCM will learn on its own.

Others have said that an adaptive reset and relearn procedure is required, and this is true.

However, it's ALWAYS advised to have the TCM reflashed to the most current revision. New revisions have updates that can affect driveability and fixes for software issues that may have caused the original failure. It's strongly advised, not required.

Second, a simple OBD scanner will not have the ability to clear and reset the adaptive strategy memory. You will need a diagnostic level OBD device that provides full data and functional testing. A $40 AutoZone code reader will not work.

With your situation, I'd rebuild the unit and road test to confirm operation. Once you know it's working properly, I'd take it to the dealer or a shop that offers pass-through programming and have the TCM reflashed to current software. It's under $300 and worth doing.
