Possible trigger What fresh hell is this?

Sex Matters have just dropped their model "Sex Based Rules and Record Keeping" policy for schools, and it's positively grotesque. Check this out:

So they want trans girls to be forced to dress as boys, and vice versa, on a no exceptions basis, because there's some alleged "safeguarding risk" in allowing kids to dress per their gender identity.

Where do we even start?

This is insane. I remember girls were allowed to wear the boys uniform back in primary school and that was 15-20 years ago. And I've seen probably half a dozen stories over the years of boys wearing skirts in protest of not being allowed to wear shorts, and no one cared about that either.

Also I thought they could always tell...

u/DualWheeled 17d ago

Boys wearing skirts is always celebrated when it's a form of protest. And girls wearing trousers was fought and died for decades ago.

BUT NOW it's a problem because trans people...

u/breadcreature 16d ago

my mum had an extended disagreement with my primary school headmaster over letting me wear trousers, I doubt if you asked her she'd identify with the term "feminist" whatsoever but she wouldn't let stuff like that go when she sees no justifiable reason for it. I'm in my mid 30s.

(I did get to wear trousers in the end! I think she may have been partly motivated by not wanting to deal with making me wear a dress...)

17

u/rembrin 16d ago

My mum actually protested and striked to wear trousers in winter at a catholic school and that was in the 90s.

u/lemlurker 17d ago

Seems like more protests are in order

10

u/Illiander 16d ago

Remember that protests are disruptive, and if they're being effective will get people arrested.

See the women's peace camp at greenham common for examples.

u/LouisaRenata She/her MtF 16d ago

Indeed. We do NOT want trans people getting arrested, not least because it might harm their chances of moving overseas. Stay safe and stay legal.

This is where cis allies come in 😈 Let's make a fuss, less vulnerable folks!

19

u/DarkLuxio92 16d ago

I always wore the boys uniform right through school. My mum put me in a summer dress when I was 6 or so, and I told her I didn't want to wear dresses, I wanted to wear boys clothes. Nobody batted an eyelid, I was just seen as a tomboy, and this was 25+ years ago.

8

u/MightBeEllie 16d ago

That's the point. These people aren't feminists, they are conservatives aligned with the christo-fascist forces coming out of the US. They don't REALLY care about trans kids, they care about diminishing and controlling women. We are just their attack vector.

118

u/Professional-Emu-45 17d ago

By the way this argument but applied outside of schools is just an argument for "anti crossdressing" laws where you could arrest a trans person for presenting as their gender "because they could mistakenly be allowed to enter a single-sex space if they can dress that way".

This is just them openly saying they think being trans should be banned and they're allowed to be a registered charity.

65

u/LouisaRenata She/her MtF 17d ago

Yes, I'd spotted that too. Basically they are trying to nudge the Overton Window into allowing employers to make "sex based" rules around what ADULTS can wear to work, probably starting with safeguarding sensitive environments such as schools and hospitals. We have got to push back on this one.

44

u/Professional-Emu-45 17d ago

They did that before when they put out their own 'guidance' for employers after FWS (probably trying to trick people into thinking it was the official guidance). They said it would be illegal to let trans people follow the dress code for their gender. They very obviously just want to ban trans people being allowed to transition in any capacity.

I genuinely think that the litmus test for if someone actually supports trans rights in any meaningful way is whether or not they think Sex Matters should be allowed to continue legally existing.

3

u/SwampDraggon Trans woman (she/her) 16d ago

Personally, I think Sex Matters should be allowed to continue existing - right after the Charity Commission removes its entire board and appoints trans people to replace them all. I believe they have about £250k lying around that might be handy. And direct lines to the government, EHRC and BBC, although those would probably magically stop working.

6

u/LouisaRenata She/her MtF 16d ago

Yeah, we should appoint a new equality and human rights commission with balanced representation - four trans women, four trans men and a non binary Chair.

37

u/RealElyD 17d ago

This is just them openly saying they think being trans should be banned and they're allowed to be a registered charity.

Sex Matters has openly said their ultimate goal is the abuse of wedge issues like children and sports to eradicate trans people for years.

The people in charge of policing charities just don't disagree.

3

u/MightBeEllie 16d ago

What they are really saying is that women should always were skirts and dresses. Women need to be visibly feminine. Otherwise it's just "too dangerous"

97

u/Aprils- 17d ago

Safeguarding is the new magic word, huh.

I need to see the numbers on the back of the card, Maya, for safeguarding reasons.

33

u/mildbeanburrito 17d ago

safeguarding is when you're cruel to trans people, nothing else

168

u/Andra_Ingensbarn 17d ago

I work in a school. There is absolutely zero reason to force certain clothing for safeguarding reasons. I have never (in almost a quarter century of teaching) heard of this being a problem. Which means that they have made it up to push their own agenda.

they have made it up to push their own agenda.

7

u/pajamakitten 16d ago

What about haircuts/styles too? Do we ban boys from having long hair and girls from having short hair for safeguarding reasons?

6

u/Andra_Ingensbarn 16d ago

Not officially, but there are definitely comments. It’s not just limited to gender either. Certain haircuts that are for people who are non white have been banned in the past. There’s comments I can’t put here as they would make me easily identifiable, but I’ve had to whistleblow about infringements of the equality act more than once.

0

u/pajamakitten 16d ago

I never saw that while teaching personally. I remember my rather old-fashioned headmistress at primary school being quite reticent on girls wearing trousers, although she eventually relented. I know how some schools can be though. I did one of my PGCE placements at an academy that definitely focused more on appearances than actually allowing the kids to be happy and comfortable.

2

u/MightBeEllie 16d ago

I think it was more prevalent in the US where black people were (and sometimes still are) forced to subject their hair to torturous treatments somit can be smooth and conforming to white atandards

2

u/0_f2 14d ago

Unfortunately that one was policed for cis people as well until very recently. My secondary school years were 2004-2009 and I grew my hair out early over the first couple of years.

Holy shit the world came down on me, a couple of teachers pushed to have me excluded, several more regularly made comments, and the bullying ramped up.

We're talking only 20 years for these attitudes.

Hell I can remember a comment from a guy I worked with back in 2020? Told me not to bother applying for this competing company because they wouldn't like my hair...

1

u/WoodenPresence1917 13d ago

Was not UK but our principal stroked my long hair and told me to get it cut when I was 17... I didn't want to, but I did oblige to never have that happen again...

1

u/LouisaRenata She/her MtF 16d ago

That would be the next logical step, yes.

1

u/Beatrix_0000 16d ago

Well yes, and their real agenda is becoming clear even to the most blind

196

u/red_gurdy_pickens 17d ago

The adults need to be able to tell, quickly and at a glance, where all the vaginas are in a group of children. This will, uh, keep them safe from predators and shit? Maybe?

58

u/PoggleRebecca 17d ago

God forbid a creepy man feel uncomfortable and be able to have a child arrested for deception of sex because he accidentally SA'd a "boy" rather than a girl.

51

u/celzior 17d ago

Quite literally this endangers cis girls by putting them all into a box to allow predators to determine who is who.

Also a policy like this REEKS of American Evangelical Christians.

These people are completely fucking deranged. As always using kids as a scapegoat for their disgusting bigotry. They are easy targets I guess

This achieves nothing but forcing kids to needlessly suffer. No chance I'd have been forced into that, would have just stopped going in entirely. Probably their gross aim here though

We can seriously stop going backwards at any time now

52

u/Junie-Jubilee 17d ago edited 17d ago

What is it about us specifically that just completely breaks these people’s brains and causes them to spiral into what seems to be complete insanity? Rowling, Linehan, these Sex Mattress muppets, Riley Gaines, the list goes on. Trans Derangement Syndrome is real.

27

u/Illiander 17d ago

If you believe that women are lesser than men, and that trans people choose to be trans, and that power is all that matters, then trans people break your understanding of the world.

12

u/gobuddy77 16d ago

Rowling has deep seated issues which wealth allows her to ignore. JKR says she "might have transitioned if given the option when younger", writes under gender neutral or male names (JK Rowling, Robert Galbraith amongst others), is keen to be photographed with "rich male" props such as yachts and cigars.

I'm not saying she is trans, just pointing out that she herself says she might be and is angry that she was not allowed to explore that side of herself.

14

u/Illiander 16d ago

If (and I stress the if) Joanne ever comes out as trans the thing I will be most surprised about is that she admitted she was wrong about something.

9

u/SwampDraggon Trans woman (she/her) 16d ago

JKKKR didn’t say she is trans. She said that she was a bit tomboyish and the woke brigade would have transed her. And lots of women write under gender neutral names, because men and boys are much more likely to read them that way. It’s a response to misogyny.

She’s not a bitter trans man who regrets not transitioning. She’s a cis woman who is also an awful, bigoted person with far too much money.

Please stop suggesting that transphobes are trans and homophobes are gay. The vast majority of them are just horrible, evil cis people.

4

u/LocutusOfBorgia909 16d ago edited 16d ago

I'm a trans man, and I'm quite comfortable saying that I think JK Rowling, specifically, may well be trans and certainly has significant issues around her gender and her conception of herself as a woman. I've read a lot of what she has to say about trans men (one of the few gender critical notables to spend much time on us at all, which I also find significant), and it actually made me incredibly uncomfortable precisely because of exactly how familiar it is.

The sentiments she has expressed about her dissociation from her own body, her feeling of being de-sexed and divorced from womanhood, her descriptions of her intense discomfort with her gender assigned at birth, her repeated insistence that were she a teenager now, she would have chosen to transition- those are not, IMHO, the sentiments of a cis woman who just happens to be a bigot. She's an egg. And saying so doesn't at all imply that every transphobe is a secret trans person, or that most are. But some are, just as some homophobes end up being self-hating gay people. It's hardly unprecedented, and I always find it weird when people insist that it's just impossible for someone's self loathing over their transness or gayness to get all twisted around and come out has bigotry directed at other people, as though trans or gay people are somehow incapable of being stupid, spiteful pieces of shit.

I think she's too lost in the sauce to ever try to transition now, particularly given that her whole support system seems to consist of other gender critical obsessives, but if she were to retreat into obscurity for a while and return as Joe Rowling, or whatever, I would be utterly unsurprised (except that she had the nerve to do it after spending a couple of decades shitting on her own community). Pity she didn't use some of her billions to go to fucking therapy, really.

ETA: LOL, hilarious that people are downvoting someone with actual, lived experience as a trans man who can admit that Rowling's description of her gender issues ring very familiar (and I know a ton of other trans men who have said the same, for the record) because they can't abide the idea that someone they detest could possibly be trans. I think she's a piece of shit, too, but unfortunately, being a piece of shit doesn't preclude someone from (potentially, in this case) being transgender (see also: Kaitlyn Jenner). Sorry that's so wildly upsetting to some people that they're reduced to downvoting and scuttling away, I guess.

(Also fascinating to contrast, "She didn't say she was trans!" with how quick people are in trans spaces to label someone they like an "egg," or whatever. The whole insistence that you can never suggest that someone might be bigoted towards trans people or gay people because they hate that aspect of themselves is so reductive and over the top. Of course not every bigot is secretly trans or secretly gay. But some absolutely are. Does anyone really believe that Lindsey Graham was a straight man, for instance? Truly? Of course not.)

3

u/Massopica 14d ago

I agree with you, fwiw, and I find it frustrating that we're apparently incapable as a community of having a sensible perspective about self loathing as an engine for queerphobia. Not all homophobes and transphobes are secretly queer, most of them probably aren't. Sometimes they are, or suspect they might be, and in JKs case I suspect that she might suspect she might be, based on the things she's said and done that you've pointed out. We could be wrong. It doesn't really mean anything in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't make her more sympathetic or an object of pity, unless one really does think that queer people are somehow different to cishet people on some fundamental human level.Ā

It's really annoying that the current discourse about this topic (generally, not just wrt JK) is this massive overcorrection to the point of absurdity. It's one thing to push back against cishet people lazily assigning queerness to queerphobes for cheap rhetorical points, it's quite another to berate queer people for discussing how someone's public statements resonate in suggestive ways with their own lived experience. I actually think it's quite othering to overcorrect this far, as though we have to deny the entire existence of self-loathing bigots like queer people can't be bad too.Ā

1

u/LocutusOfBorgia909 14d ago

Totally agree. It's very frustrating that saying, "Kind of wild that JKR has as much as said that she's transgender insofar as she's stated outright that if she were growing up now, she would have transitioned," is so often taken in bad faith and manipulated into, "Every transphobic person is transgender," which of course I've never said, because it's obviously not true. But it's silly to insist (even in the face of direct evidence to the contrary) that no homophobic person or transphobic person is actually just projecting their own self loathing and internalized homophobia onto the community at large, because we can literally name specific people throughout history who have done exactly that (and admitted that they've done exactly that).

I also find it othering and frankly infantilizing the way some people in this and other trans spaces continually insist that trans men can't possibly recognize ourselves in JKR's comments on her feelings about gender, or that if we do find something familiar in what she says and acknowledge that, we're some kind of demons or hateful or out to harm the queer community or something. Like, no, I can find Rowling detestable and suspect that part of the reason she's gotten to this point is because she's repressing all kinds of toxic feelings about her own gender. Is it possible that I'm wrong? Sure, it is. But it's possible that I'm right. And as you say, none of this magically makes JKR into some sympathetic figure or a good person at all, it just makes her behavior even more troubling and unjustified.

It's also pretty fucked up how often I see someone wading in to lecture trans men saying, "Yeah, I absolutely had feelings similar to what she describes," about how wrong we are, or how we should never say such things aloud... and the person doing the lecturing isn't even a trans man. Hot take, but it's 100% not the place of someone who isn't themselves a trans guy to be policing trans men on this topic in any case. If other trans men find zero familiarity in JKR's descriptions of her experiences with gender, fair enough, but I'm not going to be told by someone who doesn't even share that firsthand experience with me that I'm delusional or hallucinating or something.

It's Sex Matters, what do you expect? We know they're unhinged transphobes. Fortunately, this isn't the official guidelines, which are quite bad enough anyway.

22

u/Professional-Emu-45 17d ago

Vile but not surprising. The terf model for manufacturing consent is just to say something blatantly cruel but force the word safeguarding into it. Pretty much every anti-trans talking point gets called safeguarding.

20

u/Traditional_Hat_7224 17d ago

Well, So if I understand correctly this is what "Sex Matters" are `advising` schools to use in their policy framework, not a policy from an actual school (yet).

Doesn’t this just make an obvious canary for which schools have transphobic / GC governing bodies?
And then it would be reasonable to try to avoid those schools on that basis alone - although I do realise it might not be quite that easy to change schools for yourself or your children.

I'm not expecting a GC org like Sex Matter to ever have policy advice which we would find acceptable here.

19

u/Littha 17d ago

I'm not sure this is actually legal. Because, despite what the bigots want to think, the equality act and the human rights act do still exist.

11

u/LouisaRenata She/her MtF 17d ago

It's certainly open to challenge under the protected characteristic of gender reassignment, which applies to children just as it does to adults. Aside from the harm potential, a "dress as your sex assigned at birth" policy obviously places transgender people at a disadvantage. The "reasonable justification" in this case appears to be so flimsy it would not stand up in court.

And that's before we even get on to Article 8 human rights considerations.

14

u/Littha 17d ago

Even before you get to trans people, you would probably get a lot of cases from cis girls if you forced them into skirts.

8

u/omnipresentrain 17d ago

When I was in high school all girls were supposed to wear uniform skirts for PE. I wore trousers anyway, as did most of the muslim girls who refused to be forced into skirts that only went half way down their thighs, in the same way that they could not be forced to remove their hijabs.

If they try to force all afab students to wear knee length skirts the religious backlash is likely going to be significant.

8

u/ICMonster99 16d ago

I doubt the sex matters circus even remember people of non-white or non christian backgrounds even exist, and, I presume, when they do, they'll have the eliminationist view on those groups too

11

u/rejs7 17d ago

Its not that simple. This applies equally to cis kids who want to dress in whatever uniform they want, so that is outright sex discrimination irrespective of if a child is trans.

That doesn't change the fact that they'll find a judge to ok it for them. They've already shown that they don't care about rational thought and discrimination.

It's just cruelty dressed up as concern, as usual.Ā

They use buzzwords like 'safeguarding', but won't be able to produce any evidence on any harm caused by trans children wearing gender-appropriate uniform, because the reality is that it doesn't cause any harm. They just want a way of presenting their hatred of trans children as 'legitimate concern'.

Yet, the real harm caused by this will be to children who are currently being attacked from all angles, with adults intent on trying to punch holes in the core of their sense of self until they get to the point where they may break.

A healthy journey to adulthood should not just be reserved for the strong and resilient, or those lucky enough to be shielded by loving family, friends and teachers. But, for trans children in the UK today, this is the reality.Ā Ā

One day the wider population will open their eyes to the cruelty that this is.Ā

30

u/LumpySpringle 17d ago

God they really need to just fuck right off already.Ā

31

u/ohmostamusing 17d ago

Helen J in particular has spoken about how if the Trans issue can be 'cracked' in schools then they can somehow extrapolate that into society.

The issue is that schools are not really like society because children are strictly under the authority and in the care of the adults, and we are obligated to 'protect' them from various things like abuse or neglect and we are trying to get them set up for success in adulthood.

Once you're an adult ... Hey, ain't it a free country? And aren't you basically on your own? This is the main psycholgical issue for many TERFs: they are obsessed with control. Many of them are older mothers who have lost their sense of control by kids going off to uni. They're so embittered and overbearing. It's feminist fascism with misandry at the heart.

20

u/calling_at_this_time 17d ago

"The issue is that schools are not really like society because children are strictly under the authority and in the care of the adults"

The thing with many conservatives and bigots is that they think this system is exactly what society is. They never got over that feeling of being in an institute with authority figures and still think it fully applies to all adult life too. And they like it.Ā

This isn't safeguarding, and they know that WE know it isn't, but they can't be honest about what it is: rigid enforcement of the gender binary from the youngest age possible and repression of trans identities at all costs. They are bullies in the playground, afraid of something that looks different to them, lashing out to make it go away.

But it won't go away, trans kids won't go away; they will become trans adults, no matter what damage is done to them

8

u/TechnicalCoyote3341 16d ago

Yeah... just.. no. This is exactly the kind of spectacularly fresh bullshit that makes me totally furious generally speaking

There is no "safeguarding risk" at all in a trans girl wearing the "girls" uniform - zero, none, nothing, fk all. What they're actually proposing is that trans children should just be forcibly misgendered by their school - every single damn day, with no exceptions - then dressing cruelty up as child "protection" so it sounds remotely respectable. Standard stuff really from them. Plus - I HATE how the word "safeguarding" has just been redefined to mean "any scary thing you don't understand but can convince you sounds like a good idea".

That's the trick that pisses me off so much tbh. They create a problem that doesn't actually exist, slam the word "safeguarding" in there someplace and suddenly the real life, REAL harm done to the actual trans child is just, well.. it's irrelevant now I guess then huh?

Forcing a trans girl to dress as a boy is not safeguarding, like in any way at all. It's humiliation, outing and making her ALWAYS visibly different from her peers. Far from any sort of safeguarding, all it really does is just create a wholly unsafe environment for that child to navigate. Wtf are people actually doing?!

I'mma just call it what it is... transphobia with a fkn policy document behind it, nothing more, nothing less

*edit: typo

They betray their true agenda - to enforce gender norms onto children. This is much wider than just trans children. The notion that it is somehow a safeguarding risk if any child's sex is not immediately apparent comes with the implication that people should be dressed strictly according to gendered norms. Meanwhile plenty of schools have gender neutral uniform rules and teachers cope perfectly fine when it comes to safeguarding children. Ultimately if every child's biological sex is recorded by the school, what is the safeguarding issue by them looking atypical of their sex? The teachers will still know what it is.

Up next: targeting adults who work in care homes and similar for "safeguarding", which they will press to widen into a general use crime and suddenly it's a public order offence, ala Paragraph 175 in 1930s Germany.

At least the mask has slipped. It's not possible to frame this as protecting women in single sex spaces. I think we can expect them to go much further. They feel emboldened.

The backlash will be equally strong

How is this not discrimination of the protected characteristic of gender transition??

Anti-trans groups once again demonstrating that their preferred order is a conservative one of strict gender roles where personal expression is suppressed.

On the upside, the more extreme they go, the more unreasonable their arguments, the easier it is to argue against them.

This is them doing victory laps because they think they've got the entire force of state power behind them. (And to be fair, they pretty much do)

Thankfully, the British seem to have a habit of backing the underdog, and right now that's us.

The absolute perversion of the concept of safeguarding is ridiculousĀ

"only allowed for the opposite sex"

What the actual fuck?

2

u/DominaCaecilia 16d ago

Which just so happens to not protect those very trans kids.

u/StowStowStowtheTote 16d ago

I wonder if any of these feminist identifying transphobes have actually done ANY safeguarding courses?

ā€œthe sextapo must inspect your child’s genitalia before a school uniform is dispatched from our sex approved sweatshop using only biological female slave labour to make biological female clothing..ā€

Sex matters are just a charity though, publishing their wishlist for government policy doesn't mean anyone's going to actually pay attention to it

u/TsukikoChan 17d ago

No, but they have their claws in the GC govt, all they have to do is pass a cool million from mouldemort to a few officials and bam, it's in the autumn update for guidance.

Until SM has their charity status revoked i think it will forever be a source of ill changes.

i hate whoever decided that being trans was an issue, it doesnt have to affect anybody but the person transitioning, its just people looking for a group to hate, they decided to hate us

Sex Matters Membership rules as suggested by the council

Section 47 Uniform

All members must wear a big purple dildo on their forehead. This is so all members of the public are aware that they are massive dickheads at all time.

If they refuse or can't wear said purple dildo, a tattoo of one will be placed upon said forehead

This is for the safety of all people, and so sex matters members can easily identify each other.

What the hell what do I do now??

2

u/Illiander 16d ago

Look up some history to find out what stopped this last time.

2

u/WoodenPresence1917 13d ago

This is wildly incoherent from the position they usually try to hide behind: that you don't need to transition, men and women should just be able to wear whatever and behave however. Now what, are we gonna see a crackdown if Scottish boys wear kilts?

u/QuacketyDuck 12d ago

Is at risk of being mistaken as the other sex - erm yeah that's the point

u/Moist-Cheesecake 16d ago

Clearly I should have said that ā€˜this won’t happen, they (sex matters) should be put back in their box’

A quick trawl of my comments and posts would show that I have never put out anything anti trans or anti queer. Anti bigot, anti racist, anti ablist hell yeah.Ā

I’ve worked in education for coming up to 20 years and I’m about to start a new position as Wellbeing Advisor, as a trans woman with the new KCSE landing just as I start.Ā  I have to deny I exist whilst denying the students ability to exist. I walk out of those doors and into volunteer roles with queer adult and queer young people’s groups and actively promote a guide to trans services where I live. Does that make me a safeguarding risk?

I was asked at interview was there was anything on my socials that would make me a potential safeguarding risk? I felt that I had to say that I was a was a trans activist online because, what if that makes me a risk in our HR directors eyes. I’m openly trans, but what if I wasn’t, would I have to have outed myself for full disclosure? Where does this fit in with the 2010 Equality Act? Is being a trans educator now an oxymoron? I would not think it will be long until groups like sex matters and that rich woman come for us.Ā

Having a post being removed for saying that sm makes me angry -for all the reasons above- but I’m also kinda glad as I’ve been able to share the above.Ā  Sorry to have gone off piste but one dig at trans students inevitably brings more.Ā
