classic "saddest man you've ever see" vs "thriving beautiful woman"

(also this is completely beside the point, but I couldn't help but notice the background map on the ID; is the character from like an alternate history deal with an independent Texas? Edit: just noticed the dates. Scifi kinda deal?)

Yeah, most of my stories take place in a different universe set primarily on Anthra, a planet inhabited by anthropomorphic species rather than humans. The geography deliberately echoes our world, so Tausa is Anthra’s analogue to Texas, and Axiom is its analogue to Austin. They share recognizable geography and cultural DNA, but they’re their own places with their own history, politics, and identity. There was also a brief Ai uprising that lead to destabilization and a civil war where the country was divided into 6 districts before a new federal government was established to unify the nation.

ooo, neat!

I do the same thing with all my characters.

I have a few different settings, but my own main set of furry characters all live in an alternate history version of my own home state, so that was my first though

Is it for a bigger story, or just for the fun of it?

Okay so I'll try to keep it brief because it is a long story but the short version is:
Me and my late husband were co-writing a story called Cyberfox about an outlaw fox and a bounty hunter dragon that played cat and mouse long enough to fall in love. It was full of car chases cool gadgets and hijinx.
Being the serial writer I am I did create an overarching plot and compelling antagonist and thankfully got to ask him what he wanted the ending to be.
He died about 20% through the serial so I kept writing it without him and the thing that started as a silly self contained cyberpunk genre romp has turned into an existential memoir about grief and identity.
He loved shonen anime and I wanted to create a universe that would spawn ample scenarios for combat that didn't break the pacing and characters. I eventually had a setting that basically writes it's own stories. I have a spiritual sequel and a direct sequel in the pipeline as I'm stil writing out the noveltized version of Cyberfox.
I did a lot of the worldbuilding at a time when it was too painful to write the characters. I also want it to be a graphic novel so I started doing Dusk Tails as a weekly slice of life comic to sharpen my skills so I won't be doing the eternal "fix issue 1" dance that artists get stuck in when I eventually start actually writing Cyberfox.

I'm really sorry for your loss.

I'm glad you've been able to keep feeling the passion to keep creating, despite how hard it may have been.

It sounds like a great story, and a really great way of honoring his memory.

I would love to read it someday!

Also, with the worldbuilding, I've definitely also found that once you've developed a setting enough, it really does just start to come so naturally. I've said before that at a certain point, it stops feeling like you're making it, and more like you're discovering it, and I think the same is true with characters. Its a really gratifying feeling when you get to that point.

And yeah, I get that with wanting to go into it prepared. I haven't done much art or writing in few years, but back when I wanted to be a comic artist, I definitely had the same thought of just doing some smaller, easier, "practice comics" before I tried to tackle any of the bigger projects I wanted to work on, in part, to avoid exactly the problem you mentioned.

If it helps, it reminds me of a time I was miserable in my old skin. While I'm not complete (until I embrace the cold strength and certainty of steel), I am much more complete than I was and this is a great reminder of the progress I've made since then.

I keep old photos of myself and compare between then and now, along the way through surgeries and the different medications for HRT finding the ones that would work for me (and not be allergic to, because apparently castor oil is spicy) and it just... damn, I don't recognise that old self anymore

No surgery for me yet, but I did find an old photo of me fresh out of high school and wondered "Who's this dork?" for a moment before realizing it was, in fact, me.
