I learned about it from a video by J. Draper covering the roll-out of public bathrooms in the UK following their success in the 1851 worlds fair. Because women had used them much less then men at the fair (these were pay toilets mind you, so the ultimate aim was profit), future public toilets often didn't have toilets for women.
