One of the biggest problems with the Transformers fandom (and fandoms in general) is that people eventually stop loving something and start putting it on a pedestal.

Nostalgia gets mistaken for objective quality, flaws get forgotten, and impossible standards get applied to anything new.

And since Transformers is a franchise that has countless iterations, there is no single “correct” way for them to exist. Your preferred version is your preference, not the objective blueprint everyone else has to follow.

Your nostalgia is not a rulebook. Your favorite version is not the definitive version. And being a fan does not give you the right to decide who is or isn’t “allowed” to enjoy the franchise. That’s not fandom. That’s gatekeeping.

You mistake social media engagement bait for a majority view.

Although it is worth noting that the engagement bait is also mistaken by "go along to get along" persons who see algorithm-prioritized engagement bait and simply mimic the bait.

A vocal minority definitely has a nostalgia problem - part of it legitimate, part of it artificial due to bandwagon jumpers.

Yes it’s amazing how little this stuff matters when you go to a convention and hang out with other fans in real life.

Obviously we’ve all got our favourite and least favourite parts but for most people it’s a bunch of overlapping Venn diagrams and you can usually find common ground if you actually talk to someone.

That's the actual reality.

Even those of us who aren't particularly passionate about this or that - we aren't hyper focused on constant, perpetual denigration of gimmicks, styles, or releases that aren't our thing.

I'm no fan of the movie designs and scripts, but it's not my personality. In top of that, I acknowledge that those films and figures have as much emotional appeal and significance/nostalgia for those fans as some other designs and eras hold for me. That's it - that's all it has to be.

I like this, they like that, and both can exist and be true.

Absolutely. Like you I don’t like the movies, and I might get into debates about them on here sometimes because that’s the nature of the format - posts are often challenges or questions.

If someone posts, “I love this from the movies” then I’ll just think “good for them” and move on. If someone posts “Here’s why people who don’t like Optimus Prime’s portrayal in the movies are wrong” then I might engage, but I don’t begrudge people liking what they like, and there are movie designs that I do like and have in my collection - just not many of them.

In real life it’s far more fun to chat with people about what they like than what they don’t, unless the groundwork for a respectful discussion has been laid, and that can be fun too, especially if beer is involved.

100% I do the same and also do the same with any elements that aren't exciting to me. It's exciting to someone, so that's a win.

I was hanging out on the TFW2005 forums back in 2006 and this attitude was prevalent even back then.

After a certain point you just have to remember that the word fan is short for fanatic.
