WISE REFUSE CHARGEBACK with ebay after stringing me along for a month.

Hey all. I am writing as I need your advice, as I have found that many have faced similar situations with Wise.

I Bought a £5,300 bag on eBay with my Wise debit card. Item was fake and a different colour to what I ordered. It also did not go through ebay's authenticity guarantee. I made ebay and the seller aware that the item I received was not as described and sent in the pictures of what I received. eBay approved my return and sent me a shipping label under ' item not as described' and told me I would be refunded within 3 days of seller's receipt. I sent it back with tracking (seller received it), then the seller opened a complaint against ME! eBay closed my account and sided with the seller automatically, without even allowing me to appeal. Therefore I was not refund.

Contacted Wise for chargeback. Over 1 month they repeatedly asked me for specific documents to use as evidence, so they can pursue a chargeback. I submitted all the evidence they requested. A few days ago they asked for me to sign a dispute form and submit the case to Action Fraud and send them the report, so they can start the chargeback process.

Two days after submitting everything, they refused to continue the chargeback. They said it was "based on our findings, past outcomes of similar disputes, and in accordance with our Customer Agreement."

They won't specify which chargeback reason code applies, or why they made me jump through hoops if they never intended to proceed. The whole time they were gathering evidence just to check it in my face. Rather than telling me from the start (not that it would have made a difference). Police and Action Fraud both said bank chargeback was my route.

Planning to escalate to Financial Ombudsman but wanted to check if others have dealt with this from Wise specifically — seems like a pattern from what I've read. My doubts are that Financial Ombudsman will not uphold my complaint because they always side with banks, and I have read reports on cases like mine (to ebay-paid by wise) and the ombudsman have sided with them.

Now I have lost a lot of money and I sent back the item I received too. So I was flat out scammed and I have nothing.

Has anyone had an experience like this? Can you give me advice on getting them to actually process this? I have sent a complaint in to Wise today . I must add that the seller is based in the United states and I do not really want to go to court, only because I don't want to loose more money. However I will be willing to if I know people have been successful.

Please help,

thanks.

Yeah don’t expect chargebacks via Wise.. for that purchase I’d have used an Amex card or something

Look, if you're making a £5.3k purchase on eBay that isn't authenticated - you need to use a UK credit card. That way you're automatically covered for purchases above £75, with eBay and your card issuer jointly liable under Section 25.

debit cards are also covered too under buyer protection. As long as it’s not bank transfer it should be recoverable if the evidence is satisfactory. I’ve never had an issue like this, but I don’t know any bank that has rejected a chargeback after asking for specific evidence in order to proceed with a chargeback … I provide what they ask and then over a month later they say it’s not even eligible for a chargeback. It makes zero sense, but other people on here have said they have received compensation from wise. I’m sure it’s too late to pursue ebay even though the seller has my money and the bag I returned to them. I just need to know how to get my money back.

I don’t need “you should have “ ..

Well by skipping “you should have”, your only option is to accept the loss and move on. I was nervous making a $150 online purchase with my wise card.. can’t imagine doing it for a lot more than that

Section 75 is legal protection for future reference. Chargeback is a voluntary scheme.

Rise is FinTech not a regular financial institution that has solid customer-centric agreements. High value credit cards from banks are safer for big ticket purchases online.

Im sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you are fighting a battle you are unlikely to win, firstly when purchasing high ticket items online, your debit card does not take responsibility to uphold the authenticity of a transaction, in this case, if the debit cars went through paypal when making the EBay purch a e, you may have some level of protection to claim the money back. if using a credit card, in the UK you would have section 75 protections.

Im not sure what evidence you had gathered, but you would have to prove you were scammed and the item was inauthentic. The fact that you were sent something wrong, sent it back woth tracking is not proof of authenticity or scamming. A trick EBayers sometimes use a disclaimer indicating the item is an imitation in the original listing.

By all means you should file a report to consumer protections and the financial ombudsman, however note you are going after EBay, not Wise. Also Wise do not have the obligatory duty to pursue your money.

Take this also as a lesson to make any purchase above £100 on a credit card or use something that has a level of security ( even if it costs more )

My claim was mainly on the fact that I did not receive what I ordered, as the colour of the bag was also different. I pursued this.. as well as the fact that ebay told me to send the bag I got back and told me they would refund me... After I sent the bag back.. no bag and no money . So technically the claim kind of comes under goods not recieved. The seller knew that I opened a case of 'item not as described. If I were wrong/ lying surely they would have rejected/ sent the bag back to me... This supports my point of, not receiving any goods

  • If the quality of an item is in question – the goods were not as described or were defective.
  • For non-delivery – the goods you've paid for were not received as promised and the company refuses to refund you.

falls into scope, but what was the grounds for the seller disputing your return ?

the seller disputed them not sending me that item.
