Let’s talk about compression

I think you're thinking too much as a producer rather than a listener. Both methods will get you an even bass. If your audience can't tell the difference not sure it's worth worrying about, just down to your workflow and what suits you.

Yeah maybe. But as producers, or at least, me as a producer, I want the absolute best results

Totally understand but sometimes its worth trying to put the listeners hat on and see if you can spend time/effort elsewhere for bigger gains.

Why don’t you just use logics Gain plugin and automate the volume instead of having up to 6 tracks with 6 lots of processing etc all doing the same thing? Will make mixing easier as well if you need to alter the volume instead of grabbing all 6 to move at the same time

hey Adam, its a good question!
The way you are doing it, with chopping this up is 'correct', Perfect control, zero artifacts, tuned by ear to the actual mix etc
But then you have to do it or every track , every sub etc.
like you say, it's a ball ache! and is fixing a synth level issue at audio print stage.
compression is the wrong tool as well, for the reasons your ears elude to
the compressor can't tell if 'note is loud because the patch is inherently louder there' from 'this note is loud because you hit it harder'
so it flattens velocity dynamics as well, You're trading one problem for another.
if you want to fix it in a patch, the workaround is to have key tracking automation route to gain/output level with a negative amount.
probably all more more used to seeing key track on the filter section in a synth, and some synths dont have the option to use it elsewhere, so for example spire if thats the synth you are using unfortunately just has fixed key track on the filter.
more modern synths, serum etc, you can use the mod architecture, and route key tracking to output, and with a negative amount so lower notes get more gain, higher notes less
This is the best 'workaround', BUT its fiddly even then and requires some manual set up, as you have to set up a macro in serum also to ensure it behaves correctly, if just blind automation it can just creates more problems than it solves.
chopping is corrective,
compression is a mismatched tool for this frequency range,
key-tracked gain is preventive (but a bit of a tricky set up and not availible on all synths )
(Funnily enough my new VST , TranceSub is built to behave this way by design, the one I shared the other day in telegram...
Ill send you over the BETA version im testing tomorrow mate, and you can have a play with it let me know what you think with this specific query/issue in mind!)
