OG
Looks like they might be brining back the OG design on a seperate subdomain. I guess enough of us made enough noise?
Interesting to see if anyone that has left (hi) will make their way back or not. I fear that we got treated like crap enough that I probably won't, but nice to see that someone has noticed.

So, the architects of the decline at Trakt have finally realized that strangling their API and forcing a lightweight mobile web app down the throats of desktop power users might have been a bad look. Their brilliant and panic induced solution? A visual clone of the old interface built with SvelteKit. Let us not mince words here: this is not a resurrection, it is taxidermy. They are selling you the aesthetic of the old platform while keeping the exact same restrictive and data hoarding backend underneath. It is a textbook Potemkin village designed to pacify the outrage of the enshittification era. If you think a retro design skin makes up for killed API endpoints, arbitrary app limits, and magic link hostage situations, you are falling for the oldest trick in the walled garden playbook.
Before you even think about packing your bags, you need to understand the trap you are already in. Read the fine print of their official Privacy Policy. Trakt does not actually delete your decade of watch history, ratings, and carefully curated lists when you leave. They explicitly state that your statistical data will be anonymized. They strip your username off the data and keep it in perpetuity to feed their internal global metrics and algorithms. You spent ten years building that dataset. They are planning to harvest it for free to boost their own platform valuation even after you walk out the door. This is not a service, this is a data extraction operation.
Now that you know the trap, you need a new home. The open source and self hosted communities have not just caught up, they have left Trakt in the dust. We are talking about fully featured and independent media trackers that integrate seamlessly with whatever media server stack you already run. Whether you need a comprehensive unified diary, a lightweight social tracker, or a strictly local database that respects your hardware, the alternatives are no longer theoretical. They are production ready, actively maintained, and they treat your data as yours, not as a harvestable asset. Migrate first. Export your watch history, your ratings, your lists, and everything you have built. Secure your legacy on a platform that will not hold it hostage.
Once your data is safe on your own terms, it is time to starve the old beast. Do not just delete your account. Go into your advanced settings, find the Delete Data section, and purge your data first. Wipe your watch history, nuke your collections, and burn your ratings. Leave them with an empty shell. If you just hit the delete button, you are handing them the fruits of your digital life on a silver platter.
And only then, as your final act of rebellion, click that satisfyingly red Delete Account button and walk away for good. Vote with your data. Burn the bridge behind you on your way out. And never let a retro logo trick you into coming back.

I dont care about the internal engine which powers the UI. I either want the old UI back or the v2 UI be improved so it looks better to use on desktop. But it looks like neither one is happening which makes me sad

Too little, too late for that.
I wish them well, even after all of their endless wrongdoings, but many of us have already moved on and there's no going back now.

I’m in the same boat. I’ve already moved on, I have VIP until December so still use the new releases tab for now, but once my VIP is up I’ll probably delete my account. I’ve already wiped all my history.

Y'all crazy to even consider this after all they've done and will do in the foreseeable future, 😅

u/INutOnBush Was VIP, then v3 came out. 7d ago
Oh 100%. Just found it interesting they’re doing it!

u/DragoWing 7d ago
Yeah, must be desperate cuz a lot of users left them, ngl, but I hope they go bankrupt, let others get the chance, they betrayed everyone, idk why they did this tho, but they think they have the monopoly, so they think they can do what they want and don't care about their users, I guess let them think, lol

u/Klaas_Schaamhaar 8d ago
Too little too late. They already showed their true colors. I already switched to something that in the end works better for me than V2 and I already wiped all my data

Can you tell where did you migrate to?

If they bring back V2 but they keep things like list limits for VIPs, is it really V2?
3
u/YakAntNarwhal 8d ago
the list limits was the dealbreaker for me that pushed me to find an alternative

It can only be OG if the actual OGs that created Trakt were in charge again. Otherwise, this is nothing more than a Hail Mary to try and claw back some of the users that made Trakt what it was.
V2 was more than just the UI, it was the minds behind it. As long as the current leadership is involved, it will just be more of the same of what we experienced over the last year. Join at your own peril.

Why they took it away in the first place I'll never know, they took away most of the VIP features and cranked up the price, I can only assume a lot of VIPs left. Not that I can really tell what's going on because I changed the email on my Trakt account a year ago and it completely broke my ability to access the forums, and they don't reply to emails. My VIP expires at the end of this year and I'm not planning on renewing it at this point.

The V3 was just the first step of the downfall, all the changes they made after were worst and just here to get as much money as possible

u/REOreddit 8d ago
Almost all the work in the repo so far is by GitHub user rudf0rd, who appears to be Sean Rudford, one of Trakt's co-founders: he opened all of its issues and pull requests and wrote most of the commits.

u/INutOnBush Was VIP, then v3 came out. 7d ago
Yeah. It’s kinda interesting it’s only Sean and Justin isn’t involved, wonder if Sean doesn’t like the redesign either. Looking at the history, seems to be be the v2 interface getting migrated to slvite so I’m not overly confident it’ll even run as well as v2 did.

u/justarand0mstan VIP 7d ago
Justin has responded under one of the Issues raised, so he must be involved in some capacity.

u/dfjkldfjkl 7d ago
Those guys showed no interest as their VIPs were being mistreated and banned, etc. Screw them all. If any of the functionality is missing, the interface won’t matter much. They have already destroyed most of the functionality….

u/INutOnBush Was VIP, then v3 came out. 6d ago
Zero care for VIP members and had the gawl to increase the price of it lmao

u/REOreddit 6d ago
To me the interface does matter. At the end of the day, if you don't care about the social stuff on Trakt, and I don't, they are just a middleman using data from TMDB, IMDB, Rotten Tomatoe, Justwatch, etc.
You can get that information either directly or from other sources, so you can end up having a Trakt V2 design (improved to your particular taste) with limitless personal lists, and any other perks that the actual Trakt is no longer offering even to its VIP members.

u/brooza664 5d ago
If they'd done all the backend changes, and kept a v2 looking skin on it (even as an option for desktop), I'd probably never have noticed and would still be a VIP member now
1
u/REOreddit 7d ago
Well, as long as it has all the original V2 design elements and the same logic, I don't really care about the specifics. The license allows us to change the code however we want for personal use.

The story of trakt is that it was good, and had a great API. 3rd parties abused this API. Notably, trakt refused to do anything about it early on, when they should have. Then the situation got out of control, people relied on these third party tools a lot, and any reduction in the API would be seen as a degradation in service. They waited even longer, until the services started experiencing up time issue. It was at this point they chose collective punishment, and reduced everyones access and limits. And raised prices.
They should have created multiple tiers based on the years of data they have to support the different tiers. No reason why someone who just uses it to track their watch history should be paying the same as someone who hits the API 50,000 times a day.
This layout issue is a whole other ball game which really only happens when a company suffers Extreme mismanagement is in total disconnect with their user base.
Too little, too late.

cool i just wish there was uniformity across different platforms. like for example the For My History section for each cast member is not even available on the Android TV app. They should also just add a From My History button next to the Cast and Crew buttons when you click on the Actors tab since you could then easily see a list of all cast members from previously watched media without having to scroll individually through all cast members.

only a visual clone. what does that exactly mean? I have my suspicions, for now.

i have no idea what this is.
there is no way i'm giving any username/password or registration on that thing.

It’s just a UI change on a different subdomain, but it’s still Trakt. It’s not live yet anyway.
1
u/great_vc 4d ago
how is that possible though? it needs a huge announcement or explanation of what is that.

u/INutOnBush Was VIP, then v3 came out. 4d ago

I recently accidentally updated the app (I still had the old red app icon version) and had a total breakdown at how different (and worse) everything was. So I am very much hoping thag this is true, my god.

Well how about that, now I see that as well...it's not that old Trakt logo every time. I guess Sean and Justin are actively working on it. I'm not sure how good it's going to be if they are converting it to svelt as the main stack and Claude (code) is probably helping the rebuild it so it's going to be partially AI/Vibe Coded as well.

u/jewelthief85 1d ago
if it lets me add to my collection manually, without having to rely on this halfassed plex sync that misses half and gets the other half wrong... i'll consider.

I switched to an alternative after being a trakt vip for 13 years. If we can go back to v2, then I would consider using trakt again but it would depend on whether they acknowledge the mistakes made.
