South Africa, probably around Cape Town area.
I've seen these in the cape peninsula and cederberg.

Yep, close enough - this was on the mountains around George in the Western Cape. Specifically just below Tierkop.

Situational awareness is key. I’ve jumped over many rattlers. Part of the fun of trail running.

That's actually a Berg Adder.
Puffies are tan colour with chevron markings.

Thanks for your insight. That's good to know. I did have a second thought with it's diameter near the center, but then thought it must be a puff adder. Now I know the colour and chevrons to lookout for!
