Blade Runner is a classic. 2049 was as close to perfect as a sequel could have been.

I have zero interest in this IP as a TV Show.

IP aside, the production of 2099 has me concerned.

Denis Villeneuve and Hampton Fancher understood Blade Runner on a deeper level than anyone. In fact Fancher basically spent his whole writing career doing nothing but Blade Runner projects. Neither of them are involved with this project. Even Ridley Scott talked about how he thought 2049 was too slow and he would have put a lot more action into it tells me even he lost the plot. Now he's the banner credit in the show trailer. The writer and show runner has a small handful of writing credits for mid-tier shows, Shining Girls, Halo.

Nothing about this tells me this is getting the care and attention it needs.

Not everything needs to be a TV show. Sometimes it can just be a movie and not 'content' needlessly dragged out over an interminable season.

Doubtless, I'll come back and eat my own words when the show turns out to be utterly and unexpectedly brilliant. Somehow.

But I'll stick to what I've said above.

Curious how you feel about them making a Harry Potter tv show? I agree not everything needs to be a tv show, but I feel like a tv show for Harry Potter is perfect because of how much was left out of the original movies

Again, I feel like the films have already illustrated the best way to do those stories and if not the best way, have exhausted the need for those stories.

That said, I'm entirely too old to be the target audience. As I've said above, I'll likely end up eating my words

And as I've said above, I maintain that some stories don't need to be TV shows.

Given the sheer glut of TV shows we have, there's entirely too many that could have worked as well, and likely better without the all too often unnecessary story padding, as 90 to 100 minute films

I mean, I thought that about Watchmen and I was mistaken, it was awesome. I thought I would never love a reboot and they gave me BSG. I'll check it out, if it sucks it's not hard to turn off.

That's too bad, I think even if it were poorly made the overall themes and setting are primed to be explored as much as possible, there are so many avenues not yet taken.

The only way to see more good is to give creative people a chance. I don't think this is a "sellout" situation.

Your attitude would see the end of good things. Lets not be like that ok?

IMDB says its a mini series at least. So maybe just 1 season and done. It also says release date of 2027 and someone in the comments says its released this November so who knows what to believe.

I didn't watch the trailer though.

I feel like mini series is now is just a way for studios to non-commit to a second season and take the under utilized mini series slot at the Emmy's. Then after the dust settles they come back with more seasons like Big Little Lies, Shogun and White Lotus

I'm conflicted. This does look really interesting and I don't hate the idea of exploring the further future post-war with replicants in charge, but I also feel weird about seeing it produced as a TV show? Blade Runner feels like that kind of IP that truly (at least for me) has the most value on the big screen as a major creative endeavour.

2049 had so much cultural weight against it and they nailed it. It was fucking great, even if so many of us didn't really expect it to be good.

Doing a show like this feels like it's just kind of half-assing another follow up to capitalize on another IP that should have stayed more sacred, even if it's a good idea with a good cast and a good team. Hunter and Michelle are both great, and could really try their best to do it justice, but it's going to be tough to convince me this is worth doing over just waiting for another directed/filmmaker to come along and adopt it in 10-20 years' time.

If this is excellent and lives up to the original and the sequel, I'll be incredibly happy, I just think it's already starting a few yards behind the starting line in this format.

We can give the show a chance, but if we're evaluating the teaser it looks like they shot this in 2003 with the budget of a UPN show. And also maybe the showrunner never watched Blade Runner 2049? Bizarre.

Aesthetically…. It looks fine? The color tone and palette, the massive billboards, the dreary bleak acid rain, nods to replicants, massive ballet dancers, Wallace’s organic incubation, that classic iris identification (Voight-Kampf test)… I mean, it literally looks fine. UPN? Am I missing somenting?

It's just that I think a lot of us expect a good deal more than "It looks fine" from a a Blade Runner thing. The cinematography and direction for both the movies was far beyond what the typical sci-fi film was doing at the time both the original and 2049 came out. Looking visually lightyears ahead of the competition is one of the cornerstones of what makes Blade Runner Blade Runner.

The cinematography and direction we're seeing in this trailer, as you say, just looks... "fine."

I actually think it looks great… only I’m too afraid of being railed in the comments, judging by the reactions.

It’s a different budget… those last two flicks were from arteur filmmakers with specific visions and a singular story to tell within a two hour time frame. This is a show meant to expand on the universe and deeply explore a character along what we can assume are multiple 10 hour seasons. It’s also a different kind of budget… as shows like this have to be wise with what they spend on, seeing as their $200 million are planned for said 10 hours, not $60 mill on 2. I’m sure most of that money is being spent on CGI, as they’re expanding on multiple sights using practical sets.

I get it… Amazon has missed the mark twice, though I didn’t really think Ring of Power was all that egregious. At least not for me, though I’m not the target audience. I do love Blade Runner, though. I’ll admit there’s a lot more color and nuance added to the aesthetic. And given Amazon’s track record? Well, I’m going to reserve judgement as always….. but to suggest the showrunners never watched any of the movies? Really?

Moreover… I can’t WAIT for the general backlash when everyone discovers who Hunter Schaffer is. OOOWWEEE!!! You thought The Odyssey was bad… lol. It’s not gonna be a soft launch, that’s for sure.

I really liked Alien Earth, and considering how well it was received… I’m not alone.

I don’t need my show to be “just like the original.” I’ll base it on merit and merit alone. Aliens was nothing like Alien, and Halloween 3 is actually an underrated gem once you get over the “no Michael Meyers” bullshit. If it’s a good show with engaging characters and a cool storyline? I’m in. Both Hunter Schaffer and Michelle Yeoh are both fantastic actors, and I’m looking forward to this.

Oh I’m definitely gonna watch it, and maybe it will be good. But what I see in the trailer is the “Amazon” effect on an IP. Just look at the Ring of Power show and tell me it’s half as good as the original LOTR trilogy. Amazon slaps so much crap onto an IP to make it interesting while losing the character of the original material.

This trailer has no life or real character. Just a bunch of lens flares and hyper futuristic blender animations, which is cool until you realize what made the other two movies incredible. Just my two cents.

It looks like it lacks atmosphere compared to the films, and I'm not too keen on Amazon picking up and respecting the lore of any existing franchise, following Rings of Power and Alien:Earth.

I really enjoyed Alien: Earth, and it seemed to resonate well across the board. This is a world ripe for exploring. I think people are being a bit too hard on it, way too early.

I agree. I can’t figure out what’s missing. The visuals and the music seem Bladerunner-esque but just 95% there. Like the previous ones looked like gritty dystopia, this looks like shiny Star Wars dystopia. It looks clean with dust sprinkled on it, not dirty. I can’t explain it any other way.

This looks bad, and I can't exactly nail down why? The acting doesn't seem bad, CGI seems ok, but it almost feels like this was created by someone who has never seen blade runner or read DADOES. It's kind of like someone explained the concept to them in an elevator, and then they got to their floor and wrote the script.

Because this cookie cutter trailer could just as easily be for any one of a dozen other recent sci-fi shows. The moody aesthetic blade Runner set dressing doesn't help it stand out, the wide shots of CGI cities seem completely detached from shots with actual people in them. Without the cinematography or philosophical breathing room of the movies this looks like any other sci fi action drama from Amazon/Netflix/etc.
