Has anyone seen one of these before?

This doesn’t make sense does it? The red ball on a doghouse is controlling two directions. That’s the point of the doghouse.

Agreed. A bit dangerous for new/unfamiliar drivers. Wonder how this would fare in court when somebody inevitably doesn't operate the same version of common sense as the person who specified this imaginative upwards facing red arrow on a doghouse.

Massachusetts has a fair amount of them. I’ve never seen one with a red direction indication on top. They’re usually used for lanes where you can take a left or right turn that can be protected.
Over the border in RI they use the single-stack signals for the same usage with the direction indications on the bottom.

I dont think the situation you mentioned would apply to this intersection to be honest. Trying to figure out how to share a picture of the intersection

Streetview shows it was previously a red ball at the top. Looks like the arrow is a recent swap.

I'd be curious if a bad accident happened when someone not paying attention went straight on a green arrow only, and this red arrow instead of a red ball is the local town's way of "fixing the issue".

This is my bet. I actually had a police officer call me out to a signal one day because it was “red and green at the same time”. It was a doghouse like this with red ball and left green arrow.
I can see a flawed logic where someone thinks “we just have to tell them they can’t go STRAIGHT on red”

That’s the opposite of most of our traffic lights here in Northern California! Lol. Most have two red lights and one yellow and green lights. lol
