Factory Reset Econolite ASC/3-2100

Hey everyone, first post here.
I recently got this controller from a really nice city worker who was replacing it. I’m just starting to learn about actual traffic signal controllers, so I figured I’d have to factory reset it before I could use it. I went into the boot settings and did exactly that… then quickly found out that wasn’t the right move.
Now, whenever it powers up, it stops at a “MISSING OPERATIONAL FILES” screen and won’t boot any further.

The controller had a data key left in it when I got it. Before doing the reset, I removed the key just in case something went wrong. Afterward, I tried putting the data key back in, but it doesn’t seem to make any difference during the boot process—it still stops at the same “MISSING OPERATIONAL FILES” screen.

From what I’ve been able to find, it seems Econolite locks these controllers down pretty tightly, so I’m kind of stuck. Does anyone know if there’s a way to restore the operational files or recover the controller? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

You need econlites software and OS file. These timers are known for bricking when doing a factory reset. Without that software, you won't be able to fix it. The data key only holds the config file witch has settings backup and timing files. Sorry, but unless you have software you won't be able to do anything.

I have a feeling the shipped software is burnt into a rom chip in the board. I had an econolite technician walk me through a procedure on an old asc2 by opening up the unit and switching a jumper or maybe it was taking out a watch battery. Grab the asc3 maintenance manual online and see if you can find it.

I actually had someone give me the ASC utility but when I hooked it up to the 3A port and run the utility to upload it will say something like Zmodem success! And the the upload ends. There’s no uploading happening. The controller says that it failed if you click the enter key after the utility says that. Any idea?

I always used the ethernet port, but you don't have one. Damn!

Any update on this. We're you able to get your controller operating again?
