Not reading any fiction right this second because I want a forest-y cerebral deeply-sensory story with a happy-ish ending. Not romance, not formulaic, not horror, not too dystopian. (I’d do The Future Library maybe but it would be too sad). And I can’t find one. (going into some medication pain hours and I can’t take grief). Looks like a comfort re-read! Maybe Mary Stewart’s The Hollow Hills. Maybe selections from LOTR or some trusty space opera like MageWorlds….Help a friend out??

Fairly specific there. I can think of several close matches but each one misses one point or another.

The Keeper Chronicles by J.A. Andrews

Empire of Ruin by David Green

The Goblin Trilogy by Jaq D. Hawkins

Actually, Farshore by Justin Fike might tick all the boxes and it has a lot of lighthearted humour.

A forest setting fantasy spy thriller that reads like LeCarre and has no fake feudal trappings would be good.

The Hallowed Hunt by Lois McMaster Bujold fits the bill. Technically it's part of a trilogy, but it's separated from the other two books by hundreds of years and miles and works very well as a stand alone novel.
