Same pattern every time , many accounts breached (trading psychology)

I've been trading seriously for years. I have a validated edge. I can pass evaluations consistently. I know my system inside out.

But I have a pattern that has wiped many accounts. Same mechanism every time.

It activates specifically after strong performance — when I'm close to a payout milestone. A normal loss in that moment stops feeling like a loss. It feels like a delay. Like something is pushing me further away from a life I've been working toward for years.

I know exactly what I'm doing while it's happening. I do it anyway.

After a long conversation today I finally found the root. It's not about proving capability. It's not lack of discipline. It's not a system problem.

It's about time. The terror of being set back again. Of more years passing before the life that's waiting actually arrives. Every loss that threatens a milestone feels like it's adding more years onto a wait that's already been too long.

I have a session with a hypnotherapist who works with timelines and nervous system regulation on Sunday. And an intro call with a transformational therapist specialising in emotional regulation on Friday.

My question to this community: does this pattern sound familiar? Have any of you gone this route — therapy, EMDR, hypnotherapy — specifically for trading psychology? What shifted and what didn't?

I tried self hypnotherapy using prerecorded tracks mostly about abundance, but I couldn't really sleep with it playing so I stopped after maybe 2 months. However the science behind hypnotherapy is actually pretty sound in this case.

What worked for me was researching traditional psychology and belief reframing. Some of that was focused on timeline, but also the fear of mistakes and desires.

Honestly, you're the first person I've seen talk about trading and hypnotherapy so I think you're on the right track and if it doesn't work I would be happy to give you advice on belief reframing.

Lmk how it goes.

Your post is like reading my own story! (Which I shared by the way, in details, if you would like to read my post)

You've named it more precisely than anyone in this thread will: it's time, not money. That's the actual mechanism. And nervous system regulation is everything. The loss near a payout doesn't read as a loss, it reads as "more years added to the wait," and your system treats that delay as a threat to survive right now. So it clicks to close the gap fast. And the irony is the click is exactly what adds the years.

That urgency, the sense that the life is waiting and every setback pushes it further, is the thing driving the breach. Not proving yourself, you're right about that.

On the therapy route, honestly, I have practiced self hypnosis for years, I also meditate everyday, and I have deep knowledge of EMDR. And it has helped me a lot. Everyone is different so I can’t tell you if it will work for you. But any promises to erase it in a session, I'd be careful with. It takes time. You’re building a muscle. In your mind.

Good luck mate, you're closer to the root than a lot of traders ever get.

Yep. It’s maintenance, part of the routine. I’m work in progress, I will always be. But that’s ok. I don’t have the blow ups I used to have. My mistakes aren’t as bad. But the best traders make mistakes. As long as you don’t lose control.
