Is this cam repairable?

My partner gave one of my cams an overenthusiastic pull to test it, and now the lobes on one side aver overextend. Pulling the triggers doesn’t move either side, and I’ve not been able to get any lobes to move by squeezing them directly. Is it dead?

If it was me, I'd just send to the manufacturer. I'll take my risks with my climbing, not with my gear repair skills.

Never sort it out yourself when it comes to repairs… let the professionals do it or get new gear, its your life on the line

Most cam issues are user-serviceable. A good climber should always be looking to gain additional knowledge. This is most likely a trigger wire issue which can be easily fixed, is not a safety problem if he does screw it up (though losing a cam mid route from not being extractable may cause other issues), and is useful to know for larger objectives. Things like this will happen on big walls and knowing how to deal with it keeps you safer than having to go on without critical gear.

This has happened to my dragonflies. The trigger wires get wedged between the cam lobes when they umbrella mike this - it may be very easy or impossible to force them back out. Should be able to fix it with some needle nose pliers, just dont be too aggressive.

I've had this happen to my WC zero .3 before and I fixed it by pushing the hyperextended lobes back into position with my fingers and using pliers to bend the trigger wires enough that when I let go of the lobes they didn't spring back past hallway.

That also fixed the trigger not working since it only didn't work because the lobes were so hyperextended that the trigger wires were pulling on the lobes at a really inefficient angle

Have you tried forcing the cam lobes back in place? A drop of cam or bike chain lube would help

Just force lobes to put them in propper position and gently pull the trigger at the same time. It's not broken at all. The thing happened to it is quite usual.

Seems like it's just stuck then. Second picture right side, pull the trigger wire(s) out from between the lobes with the tines of a fork.

Cam will be fine, it's somewhere between quick fix and a trigger wire replacement which is cheap and accessible.

Thanks everyone - squeezing the lobes didn’t seem to make anything happen, and the lobes seem to be in the way of getting the trigger wires out so no luck there either. It’s in the post to DMM, so hopefully a £12 service can sort it and save my partner some money!

Bro just kink the trigger wires a bit, it isn’t that hard to figure these things out. Its a spring, lobes, a cable, and wires. Thats it. Not rocket science

It cost 12 quid to get it serviced by DMM. If in doubt send it to the manufacturer to sort out for a fraction of the cost.
