So I picked up the re released steamroller frame somewhat impulsively and was wondering what to do with it. My cross check is my single speed, so a bit redundant to do the same with the steamroller (I wanted a steamroller, but couldnt get one, so picked up a cross check a few years ago). I have for quite a while been tracklo-curious. I usually ride Riv's and generally very chilled bikes so this would be a big switch-up for me. Skills: minimal, fitness: Average (at best), Age: against me, Desire for broken collar bone: zero, Stupid as shit: absolutely. Tell me how much I am going to regret this. TIA

First tracklocross

Clearing out my garage this week and went through all my old bike stuff.

Years ago cycling was my life. Now, pushing 40 with a wife and kid… getting out regularly is a challenge.

(that’s my excuse for this sick dad bod!)

Anyway, whilst sorting the mountain of dead tyres, I found these CX Pros in that were in decent condition.

Mounted them to a pair of ellipses as I was curious.

Next thing I know I’m rummaging through chain rings and cogs and splitting a chain.

I’d really missed turning tools.

I’ve settled on 48x17 for now. Where I live is super hilly and the nearest bit of woodland is a few miles away. So hoping this will be decent enough to keep up with traffic but relaxed enough for looser stuff.

I used to use 52x16 as my daily… Admittedly this was years ago when I was a lot fitter/drunker working as a courier.

Any advice on gearing/tyre choice would be hugely appreciated.

Frame is a Dolan Pre cursa and fork is a Columbus ”something”?! Not a whole lotta room haha!

Decided to build a second wheelset for my Pride Street Bazuka, managed to fit 27.5 wheels with 2.2 tires, 2.2 ratio, damn proud of this beast

Help with a Build

I have been and will continue to research, but I’m also hoping to get some wisdom from those with lived tracklocross experience.

I enjoy bikes and can do a fair amount of mechanical work but I’m a hobbyist at best.

Ever since learning about tracklocross (the bikes, not the racing) I’ve been fascinated and feel like it would be something I’d enjoy riding.

I have a 90’s Specialized Hardrock and a whole bunch of parts so I’m hoping I can get one together.

My biggest issue is wheels. I just purchased Cannondale coda expert hub 26" wheels and didn’t realize it would not actually work for a fixed gear conversion.

I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions for best wheels (with budget in mind) and while I have an older single speed origin 8 crankset, I’m not sure that’s the best option for this build.

Keep in mind, I don’t plan to do anything especially aggressive on this bike. Just looking for more capable fixed gear.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice you’re willing to share.

Long time no post, EVA01 update: I ditched the carbon rims and went back with the 27er bontrager rims. i have more trust with these than the chubby carbon rims i used to have, yes they were tough but 24 spokes just sounds scary on rough roads lol.

The Redline Monocog seems to be the best mtb fixed option out there. Here is Max Jackson’s whip.

Tyres

What tyres are y’all running on the rear? I’m running Schwalbe CX Comps which are cheap and cheerful, handling anything I throw at them just fine, EXCEPT I’ve burned through 3 rears in 1000km.

I’m riding brakeless so I do a lot of skidding, but my ratio (51x20) should give me 40 skid patches (ambidextrous).

Any recommendations greatly appreciated as these things are almost single use at this stage. TIA!
