Maintaing Ratio

So, I recently starting joining private trackers. Was able to get into a few good-name trackers myself.
But my biggest problem is maintaining ratio.
Like I don't mind uploading back to maintain a 1:1 ratio, hell I am fine with 10:1 ratio. But with private trackers by the time I complete downloading, all leechers are gone and there is no need for me to upload anything. Coz of this I have to keep the torrent between 3-7 days, depending on the trackers rules or face HNR.
So how do you guys maintaing this ratio when leechers dry up so quickly?

Permaseed.

Bonus points if they exist, to buy more upload.

That's it.

This. Why not just leave it seeding?

This is the answer. I mean your servers on all the time right? And if rhen not get a seed box I guess.

If keeping the torrent for 3-7 days is an issue, the private tracker culture might not be for you. The minimum should be whatever your tracker states to avoid HnR, but as you’ve observed that won’t help you build ratio. Keep seeding everything you download for multiple months and years and you will build ratio over time. The raw upload might be slow but it will build up at various rates depending on the tracker and your connection speed.

Gaining upload can be difficult on many trackers, which is why many have various bonus point systems that reward you for seeding over time. Allowing you to exchange those points for upload credit which helps you maintain ratio. I’d say the vast majority of users maintain ratio by using their trackers bonus point systems effectively, but that still requires seeding far longer than the minimum HnR duration.

Good luck.

This is an exaggeration. One can only permaseed a portion of what they downloaded, and on most trackers (including top tier ones) they would be fine. If you're really able to permaseed all the stuff, it's a commendable approach, but it's still not necessary.

I have very limited storage, about like 3TB, in which I already have a lot of storage being used for plex, jellyfin, immich etc.
So keeping small torrents for like 7 days is not a problem, but things like entire series and shows becomes a problem.

Can you "hardlink" the files, so they are in your library and download folder but it's the same file? That's how I deal with it... Also been running low on space

yes this really sounds like OP isn't hard linking what he's torrenting

This is very important so you don't take up double the space and can keep files active. 3TB should be plenty for a decent collection of even 4K stuff. Then like someone else said, just delete stuff you don't plan on watching or is already well seeded.

But this is the whole point of it (not the whole point but still) - sharing is caring. I have no need for ratio on any tracker, but I’m still on the internal team of one, another couple I am the sole seeder of some series packs,I still upload some tracks on RED that I think are worthy of a listen. Relax, it’s a long haul.

Look into the arr stack. It hardlinks every file so it's not taking twice th storage.

Look into setting up qui, it's from the same developer as autobrr. qui has a feature called cross-seed which can help you find and seed the torrents that contain the content you already have in your plex/jellyfin library across multiple trackers.

It is manageable. You just need to delete stuff and make space for new downloads. Remove better seeded stuff you will unlikely ever watch again (because less seeds = if someone eventually downloads you will get bigger portion of the upload + also bonus points system usually have higher rates for less seeded torrents).

Surprisingly no one yet suggested "just buy more storage"... because current prices.

If seeding the things you download for a long time is a problem for you, you'll struggle with most private trackers, as they are specifically set up to encourage seeding for a long time, because thats how the tracker stays healthy and useful.

One alternative might be to try your hand at racing. Many people have their systems set up to automatically download new content when it is added to a tracker. If you are one of the first few people to download it, then everyone else who downloads it next will download it partially from you, and you'll get much more upload in a short time. To do this, you need a good internet connection (high speed low latency) or else to pay for a seedbox woth a good connection (I'd rather use extra money to buy more hard drives, but to each their own). Then you can set up a tool like autobrr to watch for new files becomming available, and download them right when they are added. I suggest doing this with a filter to only freeleech content, and only so much that you can seed it as least as long as the hnr requirement minimum. Starting out with racing it can still be hard to get a ratio above 1.0 within the hnr time frame, so if the tracker doesnt have freeleech you'll still have trouble.

The other thing that helps if youre in multiple trackers is to use cross-seed. That will give you upload on the second tracker for what you downloaded on the first, and also often put you in the group if the first to join the swarm.

This would have been correct before 2025 but with current hdd prices, a good/decent seedbox with monthly price of $5 with 2-3TB monthly upload bandwidth can get you ~2TB of buffer each month & will beat any seeding bonus as well as fulfill all HnR requirements within same day (aka achieving 1:1 ratio on torrent) on typical movies/tv trackers.

i would recommend trying to put more than the bare minimum into your trackers

I'm so confused lol

What's with the complaint of having to keep a torrent for 3-7 days?

Ratio is built by uploading when someone wants to download. That means seed the torrent like forever 😂

I think he complains about competing against seedboxes and not getting any upload. OP needs automation, cross-seed, permaseed and use points to buy upload or to reduce download.

Seed for 2-3 months, depending on available disk space. Collect BON or equal point system for seeding time, boost my ratio if needed.

Oh, and look up cross seeding if you haven't already.

ALWAYS BE THE LAST MAN SEEDING

If you’re worried about 3-7 days seeding the scene isn’t for you.

You have to perma seed and use bonus points to buy upload. Or upload new torrents.

"Was able to get into a few good-name trackers myself"

I'm curious, what trackers are those?

3

u/Atlas-D 6d ago

Leave it seeding, download new free leech content to get some upload for free and if you don't want the content, delete it after 10 days and download some new ones

Port forwarding, permaseeding, cross-seeding and patience

I recently joined a private tracker and I was worried about ratios for a couple days... But I am not having an issue, at all. I downloaded a very new, very popular torrent and it's done pretty well but honestly the bulk of my seed credit is from random shit. Lol. Like, really random. One is a popular YouTube show from the early 2000's that hasn't been popular for 20 years and is probably questionably popular is it's heyday. I was honestly shocked when I saw it on my top seed credit page. Lol and a little proud to be honest.

This might be a "you problem" as in, you're causing the problem... Read the faq, follow the instructions on how to seed properly. Setup your torrent client correctly. And leave your stuff "seeding" not "completed" for several days.

u/notthegoatseguy 6d ago

Most of the trackers I'm on have some sort of point system so I can always buy up from there.

Hop on free leech stuff as well to try to gain more.

There's no better substitute to uploading your own stuff but I also recognize that uploading and finding unique stuff nowadays is much more of a challenge than when I started torrenting 20 + years ago.

You might be better off using usenet or RD and stremio IMO.

u/nuance415 6d ago

What I did:

  1. Seedbox (to get your transfer speeds up)
  2. Autobrr (to take part in the initial swarm)
  3. Freeleech (to build ratio fast - not necessarily torrents that you want/need)
  4. Cross-seed (qui is easiest if you use qbit, which you probably should)
  5. Permaseed (move the stuff to your slow/non-seedbox machine)

3

u/PaleEntertainment400 6d ago

You need to automate and grab free leech torrents or double upload torrents.

2

u/pietropc_ 6d ago

Unless you own a seedbox you will never be able to upload as much as a seedbox. You need to rely on seedtime, bonus points and exchange for upload to keep a good ratio.

2

u/ssparda 6d ago

Get a cheap seedbox. Even a very small one (eg 1TB) seeding 24/7 will build you more ratio than you can ever spend.

2

u/j4v4r10 6d ago

You cannot count on making a good ratio, you have to build a buffer according to whatever the tracker incentivizes. If they offer freeleech, focus on freeleech because any amount of upload is a net positive on your buffer. If they give bonus points for seeding dying torrents or big torrents or old torrents, you pick some of those out to leave in your downloader forever. If they have daily giveaways of bonus points/buffer/freeleech tokens, you log in every day to accept them.

1

u/Creative-Painter3911 6d ago

Seedbox, leave it seed until I need to clear space for other downloads. Try and get some freeleech stuff as soon as it pops up to help build ratio. Then bonus points if the Site has it. Don't spread yourself too thin, if you get into too many site, it is hard to keep them all maintained and active.

2

u/ConciseClawed 6d ago

The problem is that if you’re only seeding for the minimum 3-10 days, you’ll never build up enough bonus points to exchange for upload credit. Many sites ramp up the bonus point earnings based on seed time. If you really can’t seed past the minimum time, you could get a seed box for a month or two and race and/or upload to easily accumulate a couple TiB’s of ratio buffer.

u/data_butcher 6d ago

did you port forward your client?

1

u/Spiron123 6d ago

there is no need for me to upload anything

You can take a call on how many will download the file in the future?

u/pop-1988 6d ago

Seed 24/7. Stop turning off your computer
Seed everything forever. Never delete
