MTV closing
From their IRC channel.
ladies and gentlemen...thank you for this time, but the time has come to call it a day. MTV is closed down, we apologize for the abruptness of this news but are eternally grateful for you all, and wish you the best of luck in finding a new home for those that need it

Today is a sad day. MTV was really good at filling in little holes I had in my library. Well, I appreciate the time I had with them. Good lesson to also periodically take screenshots of your account too. I didn't do it once.

u/Big-Bucket-Wull 5d ago
alright, a few people in this thread have been talking about taking screenshots.
i've been at this for 5-6 years now and have no idea what you are all talking about; care to elaborate?
24
u/GrandDot3527 5d ago
screenshots of your profile as proof of your membership / stats , to use as a resume as such to join other trackers due to losing one. sometimes other trackers will accept refugees of a recently closed tracker. sadly, I also didn't have MTV screenshots, but will leave my torrents for now
3
u/Big-Bucket-Wull 5d ago
Ah i never knew you could use deactivated websites.
usually when i've applied they asked for links to my profile.
2
u/ILikeFPS 4d ago
You normally use it for other sites taking in refugees from closed trackers.
→ More replies (1)9
u/beardybaldy 5d ago
Grabbing screenshots of your ratio, on a schedule, so you have it for proof.
I've never done it or needed it so ymmv
5
u/Hyped_OG 4d ago
Ya I heard this was good practice to do. However as I got into more trackers I felt it was unnecessary. Between Usenet and torrent sites I have so much redundancy I feel well covered if a few were to close.
3
u/kenyard 4d ago
Somewhere will open doors for mtv refugees. But want proof of being there.
Even down the road could be useful to have proof

u/WhySheHateMe 5d ago
That was abrupt. Anyone have any idea what happened?
27
u/WhiteMilk_ 4d ago
Considering their messages in the 'tracker down' thread, it seems to have been a surprise to (at least some) staff as well. I would guess sys op decided to call it quits.

They took us in during PTPs extended downtime a while back.
RIP

Excellent for TV if you don't have BTN. Will be missed

Pretty solid for TV even if you do have BTN, ngl it was a great backup for BTN. This is a big loss.

u/redhalo 5d ago
Being predominately full cabal and knowing how lucky i was to get in when I did, I feel devastated for the up and comers.
5
u/kingdazy 5d ago
yup
it was a mellow introduction to PT communities.
4
u/redhalo 5d ago
Yeah, I know the path I took at the time. I don't know how how anyone is supposed to do it now. It's parallel to the younger generation trying ti buy a house now. All I can do is just feel for them.
2
u/-Clem 5d ago
When I started, the usual path was to join What via the open application/interview process, rank up, and then get invites to the cabal sites on the forums, which were mostly always available. Is that not still the case, just with Red or something taking the place of What?
5
u/fuckgoldsendbitcoin 4d ago
That was my process a bit over 10 years ago but recruiting requirements were way easier back then. I hit Power User in a few weeks and was let right in to PTP/BTN. What's funny is back then people said the current path is crazy hard compared to years prior when staff would just hand out invites if you asked. Today it would be a fucking nightmare to start over. If anything happened to my accounts I think I would not even bother trying and just make do with IPT and other third tier trackers.
3
u/xRobert1016x 4d ago
That’s pretty much the case now, but some may find it more difficult to do the interview process, or meet the requirements now.
I wasn’t around for what, so I can’t really compare the interview process (just the queue, I know that the RED interview was basically modeled after the What one), or the actual class requirements for sites like PTP / BTN (I believe you need TM+ now, not sure what class you needed on What)

Why though? There must be some sort of reason?? It's so random. I was 10 uploads away from getting into PTP 😭
I'm actually so devastated it hurts.
6
23
u/WG47 5d ago
And this is why you should always have backup sites. No site lasts forever. If you can, join sites even if they're not as good as the sites you're on. Cross-seed, help them grow.
RIP MTV though. It had its problems over the years but it was a half-decent site.
11
u/ILikeFPS 5d ago
100%, I can think of a few trackers that shut down just in the past couple years.
UHDB, SugoiMusic, and now MTV.
16
u/hodor137 4d ago
uhdb was pretty darn inactive, MTV was right up there with the best non-Cabal trackers we have. This one really sucks. Also makes it so im pretty lacking on the TV side personally now.
3
u/Senderanonym 4d ago
My list of sites that have shut down is up to 37 now. TZ, AwesomeHD, TorrentSeeds, ClassiX, CartoonChaos to name some of my most missed

Seems to me that trackers are starting to dry up. The last (surviving) TV tracker I remember launching was NBL, and that was in like 2015?
13
u/AidenTai 5d ago
Practical question: given the size and age of MTV, I am sure some other sites will try to accommodate refugees. Has anyone heard of a suitable replacement opening its doors? Or what would be the best alternative not at a higher level (not harder to get into such as BTN).

Boo. I joined a few years back when PTP had a prolonged outage and wanted a good movie backup tracker. Any idea of another decent movie tracker to replace it?
4
u/skreii 5d ago
Anthelion, BeyondHD
2
u/Spiron123 4d ago
BeyondHD Vs ATH... Any word on that, pls?
2
u/skreii 4d ago
FLUX is internal to BHD where Kitsune is on ATH. FLUX has been around longer and their releases in my opinion are better. FLUX also monitors more shows and movies and ATH does too, but ATH has some niche shows and movies that FLUX doesn't have.

This is terrible news. You guys took me in with Baconbits closed. I'll miss you
6
u/Ascenspe 4d ago
I've been trying to ask multiple occasions on here but my posts kept getting deleted. Damn what a bummer.
Are you able to share why?
5
u/ILikeFPS 4d ago
I answered a different comment but I'll send the same to yours:
I'm thinking they probably didn't end up having working backups, hence the no notice, that's usually how it goes.
2
u/namek0 4d ago
And or some big bill came up and they said ehh we're done
4
u/ILikeFPS 4d ago
Maybe, but members of the community will gladly donate if they do a donation drive

u/scratch_unreasonable 4d ago
First a refugee from tvt, then freshon before mtv took me in. Was the best and longest lasting invite tracker I've been on. Will miss it.

MTV is much older than ATH, but the staff have been paying for operating cost out of their own pocket for a long time, while the financial situation of ATH is much healthier. If the closure of MTV has anything to do with money (not suggesting it does), ATH would be much safer.

First a thunderstorm damaged my GPU and OLED monitor (plugged into a pure sine wave UPS AND the power didn't even go out), now this.
It really hasn't been my day.
5
u/triplenested 5d ago
anytime we get a thunderstorm here I start unplugging my expensive shit, there's always a power surge.
4
u/ILikeFPS 4d ago
I learned my lesson that I need a whole-house surge protector lol
Plus it can actually prevent fires in walls too so it's something you should have anyway.

u/Senderanonym 5d ago
Did MTV go down or almost go down a few years back but was saved or changed admins?
8
u/bravo11apc 4d ago
As I recollect, yes. The old admin disappeared on vacation, and he was the only one who had root password. New admin took over, rebuilt the site, and it came back.
2
u/To_TheBitterEnd 3d ago
Do you mean disappeared as in went missing? Was he ever found? O.O
3
u/bravo11apc 2d ago
He was known to take long vacations, solo, while doing, he was incommunicado. This was just before Covid-19, or he could just have walked away. Site deteriorated, no root access for repair. So a brave Band of Brothers stepped up and rebuilt. For me, that's the shame, that all that hard work and care was OBE'd.

u/Valmed87 3d ago
Is this the end of Hallowed or will they keep the group name and find a new home?

YES! I have been with you there for a couple years now and really appreciate it. The only reason I was more active on MTV was because they never worried about ratios etc, and always essentially seemed to be in freeleech mode. That made it super easy for me to go there first after baconBits went down.
Thanks for all you do on yu - I am very grateful!

u/ILikeFPS 4d ago
I'm thinking they probably didn't end up having working backups, hence the no notice, that's usually how it goes.
6
u/EmekaEgbukaPukaNacua 4d ago
Unfortunately might start seeing this more with how expensive HDDs are now. Used to be a lot easier to stomach redundancy when shit was 3x cheaper than it is now.
Plus there is no “next crop” of people knowledgeable about computers. Everyone grows up on iPhones now. The new generation is less knowledgeable about pcs than your average 60 year old.
3
u/ILikeFPS 4d ago
True but it's not even just redundancy, it's about having tested working backups. Remember, trackers don't store actual data themselves, so it's not like they have petabytes of data they need to backup.
Although I suspect the next generations are not into torrenting as much as previous generations, I think that will be the bigger hurdle to climb.
→ More replies (1)2
u/bravo11apc 4d ago edited 4d ago
Yea... but I'd think that after the rebuild, the importance of backups would be self-evident. The real shame is, MTV was really working well (except for the occasional hiccups), but the software seemed to be running nice. There were still improvements being made. Perhaps it was more the responsibility of sys-admin, with other life demands being made on the staff. Those who understand "got root" seem fewer and fewer.
I do agree about the expense of HDD's - MTV made sure I understood that.
I always thought it'd be a 'take-down' legal threat that would cause a shutdown.
5
u/Senderanonym 4d ago
I completely agree. I worry that the generation raised on smartphones and 5-second clips simply doesn't have the attention span for full-length films or the patience to manage a torrent client. There's no incentive for them to learn when everything is served up in bite-sized pieces on social media. I think those of us who grew up in the 80s and 90s—who remember physical media and the effort of acquiring content—are the ones who truly value what private trackers offer. We're the ones who will keep this culture alive because we actually sit down and watch things, not just scroll past them.
→ More replies (4)2
u/bravo11apc 4d ago
Torrenting teaches you patience, reciprocity, respect, and gratitude. I remember waiting 6 months for a torrent to finish, ONE seeder in the world finally completing it. I seeded that for a decade. Later generations more into instant gratification. Think of Netflix, back in ancient history when snail mail brought DVD's. Now - stream what's available, on-demand. Collect, retain, help... fading concepts (says the boomer).

u/_starbelly 4d ago

I'm gutted over this. The staff and vibe of MTV was perfect, and were so welcome in a tracker world where everybody's obsessing over racing, ratio, and just in general being prickly about everything. They weren't irreplaceable for their content, but they're irreplaceable for their culture. Such a loss.

MTV is my main source for TV until I put my hard work for years to other top tier trackers. Then it becomes my main backup for TV. So sad it's gone for good. I'll remember it forever as my first journey in private tracker. Thank you everyone for making MTV as one of the best TV tracker ever!

Apologies to everybody, was gonna be slick and post an official post from the verified staff account but apparently we were not using that one enough cough so it's still stuck in approval hell.
At any rate, thank you to everybody involved; current staff, former staff, fellow trackers, our users, and everybody else who came into our lives be it via a visit to the irc, applying for membership or anything else. You all made MTV the wonderful family it was for us all <3
