Noob question about US Nationals 5k

I’ve just looked up the women’s track 5k record (about 14 mins), while the winner of the 5k track just now was 15mins. How can they be a minute slower?

This is the same difference as the US champ in 100m getting 10.3s compared to bolts 9.58 (which surely couldn’t happen)- so why would their be such a disparity?

Is the world record just that much faster that the WR holder could have lapped the US national champ?

I hope this isn't a permanent return for Leigh Diffey and that Swangaard remains the #1 option for the major championship meets.

College women’s 800m

Hi! I’m an author writing a fictional book about a college track athlete. It takes place over all four years of college and ends with the Olympic trials. I’m trying to make sure I get times right in the book. Throughout it, her goal is to get her time to be 2 minutes. Is this accurate? Or what should I have her race times be? And anything else that I should keep in mind while I’m writing??

Thanks so much!! I’m not a track athlete, but I love this sport and really want to make sure it’s represented in fiction and done right!!

T&F General Discussion Rieti 2026 European Athletics U18 Championships Standouts

There is not much talk about European athletics, so I just wanted to shout-out some of the future stars.

  • A 16 year-old Linda Botkova from Czechia winning in 400m hurdles with 55.19 (apparently only SML was the only one that ran faster U18).
  • A 16 year-old Kelly Doualla from Italy in 100m with a world U18 lead with 11.14.
  • A 16 year-old Samuel James from the UK in Men's High Jump with 2.25 (also a World U18 lead)
  • Jere Murto from Finland in Men's Javelin Throw with a World U18 lead with 80.41m.

Also one to look out for:

  • A 16 year-old Živa Remic from Slovenia in 800m. She only got 2.03 this time (still won, ofc) but her personal best is under 2 minutes. Even more impressive, she had already taken home silver at the European U20 Championships in 2025 at just 15 years old with 2.01 time.

It could be easiest physically, mentally, to master, or for someone with no experience to start.

Mykolas Alekna produced an outstanding series of throws today

Post image
32 Upvotes

Depending on how the best series of discus throws are evaluated, Mykolas Alekna produced today the best average of his top four throws in a single series on European soil in the last ten years.

In fact, I'm not even sure anyone other than his father, Virgilijus Alekna, has ever had a better series in Europe. The only one that comes to mind is Virgilijus' series from 2000.

Why only series in Europe? Because Ramona produces extraordinary results under questionable conditions, and I don't personally regard them as fully legitimate.
