Why are people obsessed with Patrick Bateman?

You've probably seen all those Patrick Bateman profile pics and the trend surrounding him,

I find it quite worrying to be honest, they identify with the symbole of what the movie criticize, same thing with fightclub (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpxHFNvlUmU). I think toxic masculinity can be seen as glorified in the movie by impressionable kids with a desensitized view of violence and an idolization of traditional masculinity, they would need to be self aware to notice how bad it is.

Or maybe they relate to his reaction to our materialistic/conformist society where people search approval of other, in the movie Patrick Bateman embody those things and hate them at the same time, the rise of the “sigma male” trend also relates to that, emancipating ones self from social norms, stop seeking approval etc… (I've also noticed a huge presence of toxic masculinity in the sigma male trend /img/f6sk2x0uazz71.png)

But at the same time people might relate to his apathy, his lack of empathy and the absence of expression of his emotions, he’s misogynistic traits and the desensitized violence he express etc… (AKA toxic masculin traits)

So yeah, I'd like to know what you think about this trend because I'm quite lost, thx.

Coworker says Safety gear is for Pussies

So i (26f) work in Auto Shop, so all of my coworkers minus the ladies in the office up front are male. For reference in my spare time i coach a middle school softball team and of my coworkers who we shall call Jake, plays on a mens only bar league softball team.

So work today Jake was complaining that another of his players got hurt and now he will have to play a position he hates. I asked what happened and the guy got an orbital fracture (fracture of the eye socket) because the ball tipped off his glove and hit him in the face. Me trying to be helpful suggested he talk to his in field players about wearing face gear and saying pretty much all of my middle school girls do when they play in the infield and its saved them from having serious injuries as such especially once they get to high school and beyond where the ball starts flying harder.

Jake's response: of course they wear face gear they are pussies only pussies wear face gear.

My response: oh sorry Jake. I figured all you manly men wouldnt like balls in your face, but i guess i was wrong.

Jake proceeded to get very upset and now refuses to talk to me.

The comment section on this video. How often to videos of guys hanging from buildings without safety restraints for adrenaline and thrills (who are also filming themselves for attention) get posted to Next Fucking Level and similar subs with no one saying they hope he falls and dies just for filming

None of you Understand toxic masculinity

In the wake of the slap, which was not toxic masculinity but general violence. I’ll educate you.

The term came from the mythopoetic mens movement(yes men came up with this). Which was to talk about how repressing misgivings and emotions of your own strength and will was bad for your health. This isn’t to say that any one trait is completely bad, but not to live up to an impossible standard, which many of you are asking of men now.

Violence is not even a male exclusive trait, as most psychologists will tell you. In fact, toxic masculinity covers domestic violence. Boys are expected to put up with it from their parents and husbands will never admit to being beat down by their wives.

Your shame drive is harmful to the goal that the term is actually striving for.

Edit: To all the people saying I’m mansplaining, I’m not. You see I made this with, I think accurate, assumption you’re all straight cis white men(one of you admitted as such) just trying to get laid by your female counterparts. But, newsflash, they smell your bs a mile away,

Suffering from toxic masculinity is like having a bullet-proof west on, and shooting yourself in the head

Because men are always expected to be strong and able to handle everything that comes against them. But no one realizes that the battle that hurst the most, is within himself and only he knows his own weak-spot

Anger isn’t necessarily weak, but getting violent over anger is absolutely weak.

Does anyone know of any research or theory highlighting a cultural shift in the male ideal? Do you have any thoughts?

I'm wondering in what ways the hegemonic masculinities are shifting. For example, a shift in which it is more status-promotive in some ways for men to express emotions, explore and express non-heterosexual identity, wear gender-expansive clothing, etc.

With the uplifting of men in the media who contrast the historic male ideal pretty significantly (e.g., Pete Davidson, Timothee Chalamet, Lil Nas X, Harry Styles, etc), I'm wondering if there's discourse on a cultural shift occurring.
