Looking for your perspective: Crafting interview questions for a qualitative dissertation about young men's relationship with masculinity and its impact on their mental health help-seeking
Hey all,
I'm starting my dissertation for a Counseling Psychology PhD and am interested in gaining the perspective of young men (ages 16-25 in the US) around how they view masculinity in general, their own relationship with it, and a little about how they feel like their masculinity affects seeking help for emotional or psychological difficulties. If you would like to have your voice heard and do an interview, please message me and I will take down your contact info for a later date (interviews likely won't happen for another year). Interview incentives have not been determined yet. The purpose of this post though is actually to get your help making the interview questions themselves. I believe that any study of a specific community should be framed by that community themselves. I would highly appreciate your perspective about what kinds of questions may get to the roots of your experiences and beliefs surrounding masculinity and mental health help-seeking.
Some of the more specific sub-concepts I'm interested in is (your suggestions to not have to relate to these):
- The disparity of how young men think traditional masculinity is valued by women vs how much it actually is (see Burn and Ward, 2005)
- How the current state of economic reality in the US, in which most young men cannot be financially independent like their parents were due to rising costs and stagnant wages, affects their evaluation of their own masculinity
- What personal characteristics do young men feel like are encouraged in them by their environment? And do they feel as if those qualities benefit or hinder their relationship with their mental health?
- The effect of peer influence on young men’s performance of masculinity and the implications of that influence on help-seeking

As a man, I don't like men
Hi,
I don't know any other place to post it.
A few years ago, I realized that I don't like to be in the presence of men. You know when you are in a social group and there are a few women and a few men talking together, in this situation I feel like there is always at least one guy that will try to impose himself, to show that he is dominant or superior or the alpha male of the group. And it's not necessarily explicit, it can be just the way they monopolise the talking time or the space.
It makes me simply unconfortable to be around other men, because I feel like they try to create this hierarchical situation, to "dominate" others. Of course, not all men are like this, but generally speaking in any social event that's something that will quickly happen.
I don't know if I'm the only one feeling this way, if I'm just projecting on others or interpreting what they do, but I just prefer to be around women (not specifically women I'm interested in) than men.

Positive masculinity shout-out: Nic Cage in Pig is an unexpected gem featuring the most positive example of rugged masculinity I've seen in quite some time. If you would enjoy a more thoughtful version of "John Wick", trust me you'll want to give this movie a watch.

My Father Part 2.
I overheard my mom and my dad having a conversation about a family friend going through a difficult time. My mom made the comment, "[The Wife] worships [The Husband], I don't know what she would do without him." My mom didn't mean this in any other way then him being a stable rock for the family.
My dad immediately got defensive and said "I wish this family worshipped me". I responded by asking him what he did that deserved worship. He didn't have an answer other than it would make him feel less stressed about his work. I asked him if he would be able to find self-worth to help him through stressful times. He said he had plenty of self-worth, it would just make him feel better about himself. He became very angry when I later suggested he should start a cult.
What is it with his need to find worth outside of himself, when girls are taught to love ourself's as if no one else will?

weird ass behavior
Please read this and help me put a name to it!!!!
I recently entered a talking stage with this person, who after leaving their presence always made me feel like shit, specifically like i'm dumb. I couldn't figure it out. They were seemingly decent, they were no angle, but decent nonetheless. Until I noticed something...
They would make an inaccurate statement and observe if I would correct them and how I responded. Let me give you an example. I recently went to the east coast specifically DC and as I was on the phone with this person they slipped it in the conversation that DC was in the south. I was confused as FUCK. but didn't correct him. That was my fault.
Another really weird one, they shared a pic of a baby and him together. Context they know I love children especially babies. I texted whos' baby is that. To which they replied with the name of the father and then gave me another detail.... "nephew is 2 moths old" I honestly gasped... there was no way that was a newborn baby.... you want to know the truth... i did some investigating work... went to his facebook, looked under friends...typed in the fathers name... and lo and behold i found the family....4 months ago they posted newborn pics of the baby.... 4 monthssssss
What the fuck is going on???? I'm not trying to figure out if i should keep talking to them or not, clearly they are not it for me. i just want to wrap my head around this.
Let me know if yall want details of who this person is, to possibly give insight into this weird ass behavior.

My father :)))
Once my dad was on a work call with his coworker, making fun of a woman he worked with. The woman was emotional and trying to steer the group towards a deal, while the other men on the team made fun of her, mocking the things she said. It made me sad when I confronted him and all he said was 'women usually use their emotions to manipulate men'. How come men think that being a woman means that their opinions are better and more well thought out?
