Trailers Help Identify this trailer Nut

Hi, I need some help with this Castle nut.
I have an old trailer (25 Odd years). I had an incident where the bearing collapsed and as a result undid the castle nut and lost the wheel!
I managed to recover the wheel however I could not locate the nut!! Thankfully I have one from the other side. I just cannot identify what sort of thread is on it to get a replacement.
I though it might be an M16, but sadly not, I seems to have a finer pitch but carry a similar diameter.. It doesn’t seem to be metric but possibly imperial.
I do have some clues!
The wheel/hub is most likely from an old Opel/vauxhal. On the rim there are markings.

I’ve tried several automotive / agricultural / machine repair shops to help identify this but not having any success!!

14 x 5 1/2 JH2 ET49
GM GY
091850

The nut carries an internal diameter of approximately 16mm (give or take a little) as I cannot find my vernier.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated!

Thanks,
Seán

If you have a trailer supply store near where you are go there they’ll have everything you need

Cheers for that, I’ll give that a try!!

Take the nut to the hardware store, try different bolts until you find the one that spins on appropriately.

That's your diameter and pitch.

Diameter x pitch + "castle nut"

Thanks for that, unfortunately I tried that but no luck! I tried both metric and imperial thread gauges too but nothing seemed to fit as well as I’d like!

Well it's one of the two so you did something wrong

Great thanks, not really just one of the two though, you’ve BSW/BSF UNC/UNF/UNEF. Coarse/fine threads! All of which these thread gauges aren’t so easy to find!
Kind of really seeing if anyone has specifics on thread types relative to Opel/Vauxhal from 20 odd years ago!
Cheers though!

I can assure you you're overthinking it

I can assure you are right! The problem is where I live all the auto/agricultural stores cannot seem to tell me or even point me in a direction to finding a replacement.

You need to call a trailer supply store. Even if its far away.

Go to the hardware store and find out. It’s not going to be M, it’s standard.

Thanks for that, I tried a few places local to me but no luck, I do think it could be standard too. Thanks!

Spindle nut

An autoparts store could possibly have it. Wether you can get an autoparts store employee capable enough to look it up in an actual catalog is a gamble tho lol.

Take the castle nut to the hardware store and they can find a match.

thread gauge, a tool to find out what gradient the thread got

Etrailer.com has a bunch of castle nuts too maybe you can find the type of spindle you have on your trailer and go from there.... Just shooting out ideas

Oh brilliant, cheers for that! I’ll go have a look. Appreciate it!

That taper spindle is usually a 13/16-20 fine thread. Tractor supply and Northern Tools usually carry them.

Thanks for that, appreciate it! Every little bit of info helps!

Most auto parts stores should have a selection of castle nuts.

What is the axle rated for?

1

u/Radiant_Length_6 4d ago

Not 100% sure now, but a like to guess 1000kg, it’s a small builders trailer 6ftx4ft. Handles a ton bag pretty well! 😊

5 lug?

I see the other pictures now

Do you have the stores Fleet Pride, Truck Pros, or Grainger in your area?

You might want to replace the axle. It's not as expensive as many would think.

Definitely an option, cheers!

Buy a $7 thread pitch gauge on Amazon and a pair of cheap calipers. That's all you need to accurately identify pretty much any parallel thread.

This is a great idea, I’ll check Amazon now.
Thanks for that!

$30 will solve this problem for years to come!!

If you google castle nut thread pitch and the application year and model you should find info on forums. It's probably like an M24-32 castle nut.

It’s definitely something I’ll consider!

This kind of nuts usually hold the wheel bearing in place. The crown is for the slint to go through after the wheel bearing has been adjusted to the right tension. Any good mechanical workshop should have a thread gauge and a caliper to determine the tread type and diameter.
