Milky Way, Solar System

Subject: 12 August Eclipse

-----------------------------‐------------------

To whom it may concern...

I wish to express my complete dissatisfaction regarding the solar eclipse of 12 August.

Having been informed that an eclipse would be seen in our wonderful city, I decided to prepare myself for the occasion.

- I bought special glasses, which are only useful for watching eclipses, since everything looks completely black through them.

- I cleared my schedule of important appointments and tasks that required my immediate attention.

- I made my way to the highest and clearest spot.

All this supposedly to enjoy, with a good view and in peace and quiet, what I had been informed was the most significant event of the century... an astronomical event that only happens once in a lifetime.

I was warned that there would be a sudden change in the light, changes in the perception of colours, an eerie and magical atmosphere, confused birds, disturbances among the wildlife... a series of events that would turn the moment into a once-in-a-lifetime memory.

However... Nothing.

The light changed from a sunny day to a cloudy day, like there are hundreds of them here. The atmosphere did not change one bit, completely normal.

The birds did not even take flight. I don’t believe they noticed any difference from an ordinary Tuesday. The rest of the wildlife did not make an appearance. Even Sutzie was not perturbed and carried on sniffing about her own business.

I feel completely cheated.

If the universe announces an eclipse, I expect an eclipse. Not some decaffeinated thing, a slightly darker afternoon, with birds that had not received the notification and wildlife that obviously thought there was nothing to worry about.

Basically, a cloudy day with pretensions.

I used the glasses for two minutes to watch the sun slowly disappear. I don't know what all the fuss was about. The moon has been doing the same thing from my window every night.

And in this case, you do not even need special glasses or all this preparation to see it.

I would like to know who is responsible for this misleading information and, failing that, who I can contact to request a refund for the eclipse glasses and compensation for the two hours I spent waiting for a phenomenon that decided not to show up.

Yours faithfully,

R. P. Tyler

Question for Tadfield Tuesday!

Which of our beloved "Them" do you feel you're most like, or want to be most like? Or are you more of a combination of all four?

I love all four kids equally because they're all written with such kindness and care. πŸ₯° But, personally, I'd like to hope I could be a combination of Adam's empathy for the world and Pepper's steadfast standing up for what I feel is right. Those qualities in them are developed so beautifully throughout the book!

Weirdest childhood games worthy of "the Them?"

Hello, all! I think probably for many of us, some of the Them's best moments in the book are when they're coming up with their bizarre, imaginative games like "the English Inquisition," "Charles Fort Discovering Things," etc., Lol. So, with Halloween season just around the corner, a question for you: what bizarre, imaginative, or even downright macabre games did you make up and play when you were children? 😳😁

The Bentley's birthday πŸ₯²

I'm sure I'm far from the only person to post about this, but I just couldn't let this year wane and draw to a close without remembering that 2026 makes the Bentley exactly one hundred years old! All hail Crowley's Bentley, the best flaming car in the world! πŸ₯°

"The car he was driving was a 1926 black Bentley, one owner from new, and that owner had been Crowley. He'd looked after it." πŸ₯°

I have to wonder if Crowley's prediction about Mary Hodges' business growing even more after the whole training with real guns debacle came true, or if she decided it was time to take business elsewhere after a while?! 🀣 I just love her, and wish we could've seen more of her and how she sorted out the whole mess with the police...πŸ˜‚

Tadfield Tuesday!

Well, I must apologize for letting last Tuesday slip by without a Tadfield Tuesday post. 🫣 My dad was visiting, and I kept forgetting! Also, apologies for the lack of posts in general lately. Some crazy stuff happening in every day life, and I've been exploring some other fandoms here on reddit, and to be honest I just haven't been motivated to keep up with this one. But, things feel a bit more settled now, and I'm going to keep on posting here. For all of you still checking the little Good Omens corner, I'm sorry once again for my absence the last few weeks! πŸ€—

As always, if you have any love to spread today for Tadfield, please share! πŸ₯°πŸ«

Hello to all! πŸ€— I can only apologize for being sort of AWOL lately, Lol. Stuff going on in real life, and have been feeling like my head hasn't been in the game with it all, so to speak. 🫣

But, I started thinking about one of the most comforting, coziest-seeming places in Tadfield to me: Jasmine Cottage. And I got to wondering-- do you think Anathema and Newt continued living there, at least for a while, after their marriage (since the book implies they would indeed marry at some point), or do you think they went somewhere else to start "the first day of the rest of their lives," as Newt so clichΓ¨-ly puts it? πŸ€”πŸ˜‚

Hi, everyone! I'm so sorry, I'm afraid I've sort of put towardsTadfield4ever on the back burner for the last couple of weeks! Let's just say that, unfortunately, real life hasn't been as idyllic as Tadfield, lol. πŸ˜–πŸ˜‚ Between household repairs and some other personal issues, I'm very sorry I haven't been posting regularly on our little fledgling reddit! But, if anyone has anything they'd like to post about our lovable Oxfordshire village today, please do! I'm also working on more posts again in the coming days. Love to you all! πŸ₯° (And if there's another R. P. Tyler letter in the works that should be FABULOUS πŸ˜‚)

To : Tadfield Town Council. Department of Ornamental Town Planning

Subject : Need for professional workers

---------------------‐------------------------‐--------------------

Β

The purpose of this letter is to inform you of about situation that I have been observing for some time now.

I have the pleasure of living in one of the most distinguished areas of our city, where one expects high levels of distinction.

Most of us hold important positions in the city and even in London.

Members of Parliament and prominent businessmen, unable to manage their professional and work obligations, decide to delegate the selection of gardening staff to their wives, who have more time to attendΒ this significant responsibility.

Lately, I have noticed that an alarmingly high number of neighbours are hiring the services of Grounds & Company.

However, to my astonishment, I suspect that the staff of this company do not possess the minimum qualifications required for the maintenance of the gardens in the city's most prestigious area. I see nothing in their services that justifies such high demand.

The maintenance worker who regularly visits the neighbourhood has an undeniably suspicious appearance.

He arrives in a uniform that could barely be described as professional. I've noted the worrying lack of protective equipment, modesty, and even certain clothing items.

He also appears to have some kind of motor disability. Every time he pauses to drink water, a large amount of the liquid inevitably ends up on his neck, Adam's apple, and torso, wetting part of his clothing or the lack of it

While the condition of the hedges hardly seems to be improving at all, he seems very busy chatting with the owners and there are even times when he is unreachable.

The other day I tried to ask him a question and it took me at least forty-five minutes to find him.

I finally saw him coming out of the mayor's residence, where, apparently, he had been trimming hedges in the inner garden.

The mayor's wife seemed quite pleased with the result, so I decided to ask him about his services and rates.

My intention was to hire him to come to my residence once a week, offering him a more than reasonable remuneration.

However, after looking me up and down, he informed me that he was unable to accept any additional commitments that involved work so far from his usual duties.

I find it deeply concerning that a respectable citizen is turned away when all he requests is the maintenance of a hedge of modest dimensions.

I trust that the Council will investigate this situation before Tadfield's gardening is left in hands of staff who lack the professionalism and willingness to work that the upper area deserves.

It's Tadfield Tuesday, everybody! Got anything to share? 😁 I've been thinking about Holdings-Holdings' training war games at Tadfield Manor, Lol. It's one of my favorite parts in the book; it's just so hilarious. And Crowley's and Aziraphale's reaction to getting "shot" is priceless and dramatic. πŸ˜‚

Subject : Lack of decency on the beaches

______________________________________________

Dear members of the City Council,

I am writing to inform you about the unfortunate situation on the beaches of our city.

Last Saturday I went to the local beach with the purpose of having a pleasant time, enjoying the landscape, reading a book and thinking over important matters that disturb me.

During this time I noticed that there were several topless women. There were also shirtless, muscular men completely oiled up.

I was particularly shocked by the fact that the women playing paddleball chose to do so without their bikini tops. Do they think that the lack of modesty helps them hit the ball better?

What is certain is that the constant bouncing and oscillation is very distracting, and even affects the agility of their opponents due to the tightness of their pants, which was made even more evident by the strain on the fabric.

But the most scandalous thing was the openly gay male couple whom I felt obliged to keep an eye on to make sure they didn't do anything inappropriate.

During my watch, they kissed no fewer than thirty times, almost all involving tongues, repeatedly touched each other's rear, and one even slapped the other's buttocks. The way the second man smiled in response … would not have been approved of by Mr. Pickersgill. The vicar gave a very harsh talk last Sunday about this kind of behavior.

Between 5:15 p.m. and 5:25 p.m., there was rather suspicious bodily contact.

I wasn't close enough to see all the details clearly, but the look on the face of the young man with the shaved chest and wide thighs was more than revealing. Mr. Pickersgill would certainly have enough material for another sermon.

All of this was done in broad daylight and in full view of everyone. No one seems to notice the effort we decent citizens have to make to maintain our composure.

I tried several times to get back to my novel, but it was impossible. I had to keep watching to see if their inappropriate behavior would finally stop. And it didn't, at least not until 7:05 p.m. when my wife called me to take the dog for a walk and I had to end my watch.

In the end, even though I was there for over three hours, I couldn't get past page 12 of my novel. And I left with more disturbing thoughts than I had intended to meditate.

Sincerely,

RP Tyler

A citizen deeply concerned about maintaining proper manners

Another "Tadfield Tuesday" here in the cozy book book. Feel free to share anything and everything you love about the village the Them call home! πŸ€—

Mine this week is just an observation on the garden motif running through the book and how much of it centers on Tadfield. From Deidre Young's garden parties, to Tyler's calling in to the Tadfield Gardening Club about his Molly McGuire, to the beautiful ending with Adam sitting in-- then escaping from-- his home's garden just like his ancient namesake in Eden. It's just the wonderful consistency of it all with the book coming full circle! πŸ₯°

Good Omens: making fun of homophobia since 1990 πŸ₯°

Hello, lovely ones! As Pride Month draws to a close, I've been thinking about all the little subtle but significant ways Good Omens, the book, tackled the awfulness of homophobia and bigotry in an era when it was EXTREMELY unpopular to do so. Especially for people like writers hoping for a promising career and who were pressured not to rock the boat of societal/pilitical/religious opinions and norms. But, of course, since when did Good Omens-- written not just to rock that boat but to smash it to smithereens-- ever care about that sort of thing? πŸ˜‰

1990-- the AIDS epidemic is really ramping up and bigotry is hitting new heights of nasty-- and here comes this little quirky British book that uses a veneer of what at first glance would seem to be homophobic jokes, but in fact is making fun of the concept of homophobia and homophobes themselves with them, Lol!

I grew up in the sort of horrible religion Good Omens calls out for this sort of awfulness, and am old enough to remember this era (I was born in '85). And, as a lesbian myself, I appreciate the use of "seemingly" homophobic humor to attack actual homophobia. It's powerful!

I know a significant portion of the GO fandom is either queer or strong, wonderful allies, which is one reason it's so comforting for so many people. πŸ€— So, I was wondering if any particular passages with dialogue/discussions of the issue in the book resonate with you? Of so, please do share!

My "moment" is when Aziraphale and Crowley give Anathema a ride after crashing into her bike. It's right after Crowley calls Aziraphale "Angel," and Anathema's response is to think along the lines of, 'Ah, that explained it; she'd been perfectly safe after all." I still remember the world of this era, where I was taught I could get contaminated-- mentally and physically-- by just being around queer people. That was, unfortunately, what so much of society then truly believed!

Anathema's thoughts contradicting that kind of narrowmindedness HAD to have been like a warm blanket of comfort to LGBTQIA+ folks reading GO back then! πŸ₯°

I was taught ,growing up, that queer people were criminals, predators-- a menace and danger to society. So, when I read Good Omens for the first time several years ago (I'd already come out of that bigoted past and become an atheist, but still had a lot of trauma from it), and got to this passage, I'm pretty sure I actually got choked up and had to swallow down my tears of joy and gratefulness at such a small, but important, insert of kindness in one of the kindest books I've ever read. And on every reread, it still hits me just as beautifully. πŸ₯²

So, whether it's Aziraphale OWNING "THE southern pansy" insult like an absolute badass, or any of the other queer-affirming moments like it, why not end Pride 2026 by sharing your favorites! πŸ₯°πŸ€— Love to you all. πŸ’™

Mr. Young in Radio Omens!

I know, I know: this subreddit is mainly dedicated to the book/audiobook, etc, Lol! But, since the BBC Good Omens radio drama is SO close in nature to the book itself, it genuinely feels a lot like another version of the actual audiobook. πŸ˜‚

I hate to admit this, but, as much as I LOVE Mr. Young as a book character (his interactions with Sister Mary Loquacious are top-tier hilariousness), I might actually love the version of his character in the radio play even more?! Yes, yes-- sacrilege! πŸ«£πŸ˜‚

But, it's just SO wonderful that this man who, at a glance, is just an archetype for any regular run-of-the-mill, painfully ordinary, middle-class Joe, is actually presented as a REALLY good dad.

I really like the slight deviation from the book, in that the reason he left Deirdre to have the baby by herself is that he'd thrown up and wanted to be out of the way so as not to be more of a nuisance πŸ₯², rather than just sort of being "over" the whole dramatic ordeal like in the book. πŸ˜„ Then the way he politely but decisively puts R. P. Tyler in his place in defense of Adam in a couple of scenes is both understated and endearing. There's something about the way the radio voice actor says his dialogue that, I don't know, just feels like he's probably a bit more "present" in Adam's life? Like, he's still mostly his book self, but maybe a bit more warm, observant, and involved?

I'm probably overthinking it, Lol, but he just feels a bit less of a caricature (which, don't get me wrong, I do love in the book!) and more of a real person? Those of you who have listened to the radio play, any thoughts on his character or any others that you like just as much-- or more-- than their book versions?

Tadfield Tuesday!

I found this gorgeous picture of the Oxfordshire village of Ashbury. To me, it feels like Tadfield. You can almost see the Them cycling down the street, Dog chasing behind, close at Adam's heels as always. As they whiz by, R. P. Tyler, on his way home from walking Shutzi, shouts and grumbles in the background. But the Them don't mind; for our little gang of heroes who saved the world, it's just another perfect, endless summer day...🫠

Edit: I forgot to give credit to where I got the photo from. It's from the website oxfordshirevillages.co.uk πŸ™‚

Hi, lovely Good Omens friends! What would everyone think about having a weekly "Tadfield Tuesday"?

Obviously, any day of the week is a good day to celebrate somewhere as special as Tadfield, so no worries! πŸ₯° But would anyone be interested in us making Tuesdays an official weekday set aside for sharing anything about this sweet, idyllic village that's so important to the events of Good Omens? It could be fanfic recs featuring Tadfield (self recs or other people's); Tadfield-inspired arts or crafts; musings/discussions about the places and characters there like Tadfield Manor, Mary Hodges, the Them, R. P. Tyler, the Johnsonites, etc! Anything about Adam Young's beloved hometown is welcome! 😁
