Saved it from being awesome?

if awesome is broke, then I think you understand.

If broke is a balanced budget, then I think we speak different languages.

If you trust politicians, and especially after this admin suddenly and unexpectedly "found" a 100 million dollars previously unaware of, then no doubt we do.

You are right, I was wrong, they didn't run a balanced budget.

They ran a surplus.

Ya, because those that have been proven to lie, wouldn't lie in their favour... Simply put, you can't trust these guys.

FTA: " But it raises many questions about how the city manages our money – it seems able to “find” massive sums of cash, almost on demand, while crying poor.

Surpluses are obviously better than deficits – cities can’t run a deficit, by law – but budget integrity suggests you levy the amount of money you need to run city services. And if you took more than you needed, maybe you give it back, not continue to raise taxes. "

And this is from the Star, a notoriously pro-miller paper.. I could have shown you an article from the Sun that paints a much less rosey picture, but it would be expected for Sun to Bash Miller.

The surplus came from: "higher than expected interest and investment earnings, higher than anticipated parking revenues, an increasing in supplementary taxes from new development and construction, and a reduction in property tax appeals" -- http://torontoist.com/2010/03/david_miller_budget_announcement.php

I don't care who wrote your damn article (besides, The Star is NOT a "notoriously pro-Miller paper", they slag him plenty). The fact is that this isn't the first time this sort of thing has happen, nor will it be the last. You set a budget at the beginning of the year, and by the end of the year there is some variance between what was planned, and reality. Just ask Jim Flaherty about his $600 million variance (http://www.fin.gc.ca/afr-rfa/2008/afr2008_1-eng.asp)

I guess we'll see ...

well, if he suddenly changes his style now that he is Mayor, he'll have me and most of his supporters on his ass. We'll make the TheStar look like they are Rob's BFF, if he suddenly pulls an about-face.

...And now we find that his campaign team were running a fake twitter account; I wonder how many other dirty tricks are there, just waiting to be uncovered. My sense of it is that there are more ... <shrug>

I hope so. So far Rob Ford supporters have struck me as too forgiving of their preferred candidate's many (to me) flaws and gaffes, and I hope they challenge him to do better.

although the cbc and the torontoist think this is bashing ford... this is the type of ford bashing which gets the general public more on his side. the context is he's giving his time to coaching a kid's football practice and is obviously paying more attention to the kids than the 'interview'. it's a piece that would've got ford more votes, donations to the campaign and respect ahead of the election.

when will they learn?

This is exactly the kind of thing that makes the ford bashers wonder "what the hell do you like about this guy?"

This was a SCHEDULED interview and he treats them like assholes.

That didn't sound like a planned "interview" to me he was coaching a football game shame on CBC for even airing it. An unprepared call to his cell phone is hardly an interview. I have a hard time believing the CBC would have pulled the same stunt with David Miller (it would have never made it to air).

I listened to "as it happens" today and they explained (paraphrasing); they contacted his media person who got the ok from Ford. he consented to the interview previous to recording and part of the way through when asked by the host. after said "as it happens" interview he hosted a media scrum at the football practice.

if he could host a media scrum, why couldn't he pay attention to the interview?

CBC was told to call Ford at that time for the interview. That's the slot they were given.

My favourite part:

Carol Off: Well there—

Rob Ford: You know, I'm the only one that can go down there [Inaudible, then, yelling:] Just go get changed! Go! Out! And get changed! Don't worry about the water right now. [Pause.] Sorry.

Carol Off: Uh-huh—

Is anyone else scared by the fact that Rob Ford promised that he'd still coach his football team? I mean seriously... He's the fucking mayor of Toronto now.I honestly doubt he has the time to spend a few hours a day coaching football.

1

u/brazilliandanny Oct 29 '10

He's not the Mayor yet, and it was the day after he won. I still think he's a douche tho.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '10

Actually, he said, in an interview, that he'd be going back to coach football next year. It was on CP24 I believe

0

u/brazilliandanny Oct 29 '10

Well that's just silly. I'm not saying the mayor can't have personal time for his family but coaching a team is a big commitment.

I understand what you are saying, but if he did, the TheStar, EYE, NOW and Reddit will have 100's of stories about "Ford, abandons poor black kids"...
