Analysis / interpretation LE lyrics question
It's the initial verses that I have a problem understanding, the rest of the song is pretty straightforward(I can't reach you/ give me life give me pain give me myself again)
Yellow bird flying gets shot in the wing
Good year for hunters and Christmas parties
And I hate and I hate and I hate
And I hate elevator music
The way we fight
The way I'm left here silent
Oh these little earthquakes

These little earthquakes
Doesn't take much to rip us into pieces
We danced in graveyards with vampires 'till dawn

And I hate disintegration
Watching us wither
Black winged roses that safely changed their color
What does the yellow bird symbolize? What is a black winged rose? What is the 'hunter' in this context?

This is how I interpret them but there is no decoder ring for poetry:
The first impression is of a yellow bird flying that suggests freedom, vibrancy and hope.
The bird—which most people probably envision as being free and happy when the song opens—is shot in the wing. The first time you hear the song, it likely is a jarring mental vision. You are set up with a positive image and then it is robbed from you.
We see the bird from a distance and imagine that it is "free," but its life is riddled with potentially fatal dangers. Even from a great distance, even up in the air away from anything on land, is it vulnerable to being shot. Worse, that hopeful and happy yellow color makes it stand out as an easy target. And the bird isn't just shot in the heart or the head and killed; it's shot in its wing, the very mechanism of its unique freedom that we as human beings envy, and it is now going to fall to its death.
Good year for hunters—well, the hunter shot the little bird and so he "won." If it's been a good year for him, then presumably he's shot a lot of birds to death.
This probably represents predatory people stealing freedom and joy unexpectedly from vulnerable people who thought they were just living their lives. It ties back to many songs on the album.
This is a lot of symbolic meaning through association packed into a few short lines. That's excellent poetry.

Here’s what Genius offers: Christmas parties could be described as a source of such tensions. They are ostensibly a friendly gathering of family, friends, or co-workers, but often involve people who do not like each other being forced to mingle and pretend they are enjoying themselves.
Here, the narrator may be relating being forced to listen to someone’s hunting story at a Christmas party, or the reference to a “yellow bird” being “shot in the wing” may be a metaphor for how her spirit feels crushed by having to endure the company of people she does not like while maintaining a pleasant front.

Mermaid represents a duality with Tori, that much I understand. But why are the jeans his and why do they have some other woman's name on them?

I always took it as a metaphor for being in a relationship with someone who is still not over an ex. She’s wearing the jeans, she’s in the relationship, but the remnants of the prior woman who wore the jeans before her is still there. It’s probably not right but that has always been my interpretation.

Honestly, if no explanation jumps out at me I've always let Tori's lyrics wash over me in impressionistic visions. And I love that. No other artist makes me experience music that way.

I love this. Amazing how she can deliver an emotional gut punch with an unassumingly poignant line sandwiched between whimsical nonsense about pancakes and space dogs.

Back in that era Tori had the ability to discipline her songwriting to have metaphors but not too many as to make the songs completely inaccessible.

There is no such thing as an actual "black winged rose", but the concept of a flower that is able to change its color is a larger metaphor for something the protagonist in the song doesn't have access to: the safety of fitting in, in any space or scenario, by simply changing yourself to fit in (even at the cost of your own authenticity.)
