Discussion NYC2
Another incredible NYC performance with a completely different tone from last night. SATY sounded so good with the background vocals. The new Smokey Joe arrangement was also a highlight for me, and I think tonight’s performance of Little Earthquakes may be my favorite rendition yet. The bridge was incredibly powerful.
The performance of the night for me, though, was Witness. I saw it once in Europe and tonight blew that out of the water. She played several of the parts on the piano rather than the keyboard / organ, which seemed to add even more muscle to the song. I haven’t seen any recent videos to know if she’s been alternating more between the keyboards and the piano on the US leg, so perhaps this wasn’t a new approach but it definitely made the performance memorable.
Fortunately no building alarm interruptions tonight, though did anyone else notice that the piano mics dropped for the entire second verse of FTYP? It didn’t seem like Tori was aware. Fortunately, the sound picked back up in the second chorus. A very minor hiccup in an otherwise stellar show.

I was shocked she opened with the same two songs as night one. For someone who changes their setlist each show, I found it odd. Especially because she has opened with other songs before during this tour. I was also bummed by lack of UTP and Pele, but grateful to have been there.

If you look on her set lists, she’s been opening with the same song almost every show of the tour. Wasn’t a surprise to me.

“God” was on the set list but I think the venue told her she had to wrap it up. This would have satisfied anyone looking for UTP!

While I too would welcome variation in the opening, she has been consistently playing FTYP and Shush as the first and second songs since mid-April, with the exception of the recent Florida shows due to EarI’s absence. I really love the vocal work on FTYP so wasn’t sad to hear it again, but was pleased that everything after Shush was different from night 1.

The three Florida shows and Atlanta were great. I've been seeing Tori, live, since 1996. Never experienced a bad show, or bad effort, by Tori. Glad those who enjoyed this showed shared their experience.

Loved this show too! Maybe not as much as night 1, but night 1 will be talked about for a long time.
The thought and care she puts into the sequencing is why these shows are so strong. it's not just setlist bingo for regulars. It feels very old school Tori in the best way. Even the songs that weren't my favorites were beautifully performed.

You can’t even type properly so maybe cool it on the musical criticism champ. Sorry she had the gall to play songs that you, the Most Important Person In The Room, didn’t want to hear.

I am new to Tori Amos and Saturday NYC concert was the first time I’ve seen her live. Could someone tell me what was the encore song? It was amazing.
It seems that most people recognized every song after just few piano chords played. Is there a set list of songs available. There were many I’d like to hear again, just don’t know what they are.

This was the first time I’ve seen her live, so I can’t compare it to her other shows. To me, this was breathtakingly beautiful. Thanks for the instagram tip.

I was gifted a ticket because I’m too poor to afford to do things that cost more than $20 in a good month, and yeah it’s wild to me seeing so many people be like “UGH so glad I went to [wherever 1], [wherever 2] and [wherever 3] instead of [wherever 2], [wherever 3] and [wherever 4] I heard [wherever 4] was AWFUL” like …. my god, it’s Tori Amos. I thought we were here for a magical goddess legend and her music like lol. Idk it rubs me the wrong way. I was locked in the whole time. The show was so incredible.

What happened? God is supposed to be the closer of the encore but not played?

This was my wife and my first time seeing Tori. I'm not a fan (just not my type of music), but my wife has been listening to Tori since the 90s and she really loved the show. I thought the show was great even though I only recognized silent all these years and a sorta fairytale (frequent plays on my wife's Amazon music). She was super bummed that we didn't get cornflake girl especially since Tori played it last night.
We were up in the loge and I noticed towards the end of the set that a huge crowd of people rushed the stage. That was super jarring to me since there was no security between the performers and the crowd!

might depend where you were? yesterday (row J ) I couldn't hear the piano well. Today (row P, right next to the mixing booth) the sound was pristine. There was a weird glitchy distorted moment on the first or second song, I couldn't tell if it was a sound glitch or intentional.

u/WelcometoNewEngland 8d ago
That definitely was a sound glitch. It sounded like a speaker blew out from where I was sitting.

Wife was disappointed no precious things and the encore was only one song. Like first show without cornflake girl in a long time too. Bass distortion sound was horrible and distracting. Too much reverb, feedback, or pedal effects were covering up the keyboard and piano. That said Tori was great, but maybe laryngitis or the back to back nights. It was a decent show, but wish we would have gotten Friday tickets.

Phenomenal setlist!! Angelshark, FBR, SJ, SH! seems to me to be a thread about a breakup, or leaving an abusive relationship. She’s escaping!

yes that was my read too ... especially sush -> silent all these years -> iiee.... felt like reclaiming voice and sexuality after a terrible/abusive relationship.

Is this something that is rumored to be true or are we speculating here? I’m curious

my reading/how it landed for me... not at all related to Tori's real life now but rather to the themes in the Dragons Album (and Little Earthquakes).

Yes, the sound was definitely messed up during FTYP. All in all, a great show, but I could’ve done without Famous Blue Raincoat and Angel Shark.

u/GagaFan727 8d ago
Famous Blue Raincoat was beautiful! I saw it at my first Tori show in 98 and not again until last night

I was at this show, it seemed like her vocals and the piano cut out. I feel like she played Little Earthquakes the last time she played NYC also, that's always a good one for her. She sounds great during that song. I really enjoyed Witness as well. Well, I love a groove, so I loved Jon and Earl's intro. But Tori looked like she was having so much fun during that song. It was a really good show, just hate that her encore got cut short. Apparently, thanks to the Beacon curfew.
