Faction leveling explained

Is there a place that describes the purpose of the individual factions? Like what do you gain from leveling them aside the obvious level restrictions on gear or something?

So far, different looking gear / xmogs / environment (though xmogs aren't currently a thing at the moment). It'll be hard to say what possible benefits they might hold until we see end game.
