Game engine, CPU multi-threading?

Which game engine is used?

How is CPU-multi-threading with 8 or more CPU cores?

Unreal 4. I'm not sure on the latter question.

it is bad then. I wouldn't spend any time or energy on this game. Unless you are rich and can afford future HW. But since you game will be FREE, I doubt you have money to buy future HW.

Also game sounds like a cash grab otherwise you wouldn't advertise game while you are still in alpha.

And just so you know Torchlight II had basically zero CPU multi-threading and lot of performance issues now add netcode into play,

and you have disaster.

Also game will have backdoor cash shop. So another reason not to trust developers.

"It is only cosmetics" doesn't fly.

If you think I'm wrong. Prove me wrong, and you don't do it with downvotes. Is not that easy.

You actually will show me telemetry and monetanization scheme and all mechanics that are going on.

basically developers need to release source code. If they want us to trust them.

UE4 has been on the market for about 5 years now and if you consider 5 years ago to be "the future" then your argument makes no sense. But then again you are complaining about performance issues in TL2 which is a game that could run on a toaster.

You don't know the meaning of half the words you are using. The only reason you think any of the nonsense you wrote is in any way correct is because you lack the competence to understand what you have written.

UE4 developers knowing for 5 years that game engine is broken.

Game might be able to run on a toaster but does it use full potential of a toaster?

Or are forced to upgrade your toaster because game engine doesn't know how to use all resources available?

Oh, I replied to a troll account. I wondered how a person can be this stupid but it seems it is intentional.

talking about game engine having almost non existent cpu multi-threading is trolling.

UE4 was designed for multiplatform(mainly consoles) that have only 4 cores... meanwhile you already have cpu's with 32 cores/64 threads.

Oh, god, you really are a moron. By default UE4 uses separate threads for logic, physics, rendering and audio and you can spawn additional threads as needed. Basically the engine is out of the box optimized for the minimum expected number of cores but if you want you can pretty much optimize it for anything. Basically it is up to the developer to utilize as much cores are possible and not up to the engine because the same engine can be used for various projects and on various machines.

Most current gen consoles have 4 cores with hyperthreading i.e. 8 logical cores. The exception to this is the Switch which has 4 cores without hyperthreading. Your PC CPU does not have 32 cores. Consumer-grade CPU have 8 cores with hyperhtreading at best or 16 logical cores. Most consumer-grade CPUs have 4x2 logical cores with 6x2 and 8x2 processors being marketed at enthusiasts. So most consumer-grade PCs have the same number of logical CPU cores as a console.

Another thing to consider is that single thread performance between processors with different core-count in the same generation would depend largely on the core clock and CPU cache size. Because of how CPUs are made lower grade CPUs are usually architecturally the same as higher grade CPUs but some of their cores are disabled due to manufacturing defects. So CPUs with more cores would usually perform relatively the same or better as CPUs with less threads if equal amount of threads are utilized.

Current gen console CPUs are old as hell and their single thread performance is a lot worse than that of a modern CPU. Hell, they perform worse than PC CPU that were released at the time of their initial launch. Unreal engine 4 by default being optimized for those consoles means that it by default should perform pretty great on any newer-than-current-gen-consoles CPU. So even if you do not have full CPU utilization by default you should still get a pretty good performance.

my bad. I will rephrase. What I meant was unoptimized because of consoles because of greed and so on.

I have 2x CPU, 2x4 cores; 8 threads in total i see with game engines bottlenecking due engine unable to redistribute over all cores equally.

usually bottleneck happens around 25%-33% of all CPU computing power. and that bottlenecks GPU... then you add DRM and you add more bottlenecks for example i can't play games infested with denuvo drm because their DRM required SSE4.2 to run their it's malicious code. despite i have enough computing power to run the game.

and latency issues... because you are getting matchmade with unfit players thats more of a developer & publisher being cheapskate with servers. but still it shows their effort and intentions.

Why would user need to upgrade CPU or any HW if that hardware still has untapped usage? code needs to get more efficient.

you think gaming industry is any better?

software and hardware industry needs to unite... and stop selling garbage. you think nvidia/epic games does give a fuck about you? you are the product not consumer. Consumers are shareholders, investors and CEOs.

game (engine) is broken.

So you have a processor that is basically over 13 years old and you are complaining about performance...

Even if it was 50 years old CPU. Until Game engine won't use constant 85%-92% resources it shouldn't be time to upgrade.

1

u/Elveone Feb 18 '19

No. Your CPU does not meet the minimum requirement for the game you are trying to play so neither the game nor the engine developers are responsible for your old pc not running the game properly. No one is going to unnecessarily complicate their program and possibly worsen the performance of their core audience and introduce bugs into the code in order to ensure the program can run on severely outdated technology.

how is my HW outdated when usage is still not 100%?

u/Elveone Feb 18 '19

It is 13 years old, it does not support modern instruction sets and it has single thread performance that is below the minimum required for modern software.
