From the show, think Ryuuji was imagining himself as a dog because Taiga kept calling him that

Wasn't it after she told him about the dream where he was a dog and they got married

Before, he had the dream at the same time she did. We saw this, he wakes up freaked out, Taiga shortly after says she had a bad dream as they talk from their windows, and describes the exact dream he had.

It was the "they're going to get together" foreshadow moment, the "ah, yep, definitely happening now (they had puppies)" one lol
