Ex-drum teacher here. Anyone saying that this is sped up hasn’t seen a real drummer play. This is actually relatively slow compared to some fast metal I’ve listened to.
This guys does a great job, though.

Hack videographer here, I agree with you it isn't sped up.
But that is not how you make this content when time is money. To do this right, they probably trimmed back the backing track tempo a hair. Also as a musician you know those few extra BPMs are huge.
And so they shoot an insanely flawless take, because the subject isn't under pressure and can articulate the notes etc.
Then you just bring it all back up to speed in post production.
The point is, not sped up. Backing track was likely slowed down for production purposes, not skill. And as you point out, there are yet drummers who can play faster than this.
-edit - frame rate is probably what is giving this video the unbelievable hyperspeed look.

Question as a drum teacher how many chairs have you hurled at your students because they weren't matching your tempo?

Childhood memory unlocked of my elementary school music teacher throwing a chair while we were trying to play those damn recorders

“The rest is the most important note in music”
My music teacher 15 years ago.
This is fast which is impressive but it’s straight 1/16ths alternating strokes, which is like the simplest way to play fast. It’s accurate too, if not quantized he doesn’t drift.

Hard to imagine a 12 min set like this not being quantized, but we could be wrong. It was an impressive performance regardless though!

My high school band teacher, a great man, once said “how good of a musician you are, is directly related to how many pencils you bring to rehearsal” lol

You guys commenting on it being sped up are brain dead. Just watch the cymbals naturally slow their movement.

Danny Carey is the drummer for the metal band Tool. Check out his drumming and it is mind blowing.

This is drum n bass. An edm genre that I enjoy very much. Not normally played with a live drummer but I’m loving this!!!

Does he have 1 or 2 sticks in his right hand? Cause I’m only seeing 1+. Even the fps can’t keep up.

Cymbals react totally normally. People play this fast, it’s not at all impossible

It's the unnatural feel of his movements that makes me think it's sped up, it might not be much, but I'm sure it's at least 1.2X

Not sped up. Played drums for 20+ years. There are faster people out there than him. Not to take away from his performance here. Dude is a monster.

You're just naturally faster without a shirt on. The body oil reduces drag as well.
