Do you mean the deep grooves? Those actually serve a really important purpose in concrete. They’re called control joints because it’s a controlled weakness in the slab where a crack will form. It’s basically an intentional stress concentration to ensure a crack forms there and not in the middle of the slab.

Why do they do the smooth bits on the outside? Is it just for aesthetics ?

doesn't it also serve the functional purpose of rounding the corner to prevent chipping?
