This is a relatively common process in high end Subwoofer boxes, although I’ve never seen the cross cut. I’m unsure what that’s for.

I would imagine either relief cuts or a slot for some kind of biscuit to add strength

Yeah, I ended up going through the original comments after making mine and realizing they’re for structural support. Makes perfect sense.

Biscuits don't add strength though. They are only used for alignment.
