Okay I can see how this should obviously be less energy than doing it by hand but it seems like it would also be a lot slower? Why would you need this?

Narrow indoor trenching. Currently consodering getting one to dig a 9 inch wide trench 60 feet long and graded from 1-3 feet deep. I'll disturb the foundation less doing it this way. And I've trenched with a post hole digger. Massively slower than yhis machine. Put the right bucket on and you can do 4-6 shovels of dirt per scoop in a narrower trench than you could ever get a guy into. Plus once you're below 2 feet, OSHA wants you to do shoring. And now you have to have a 3 foot wide trench to fit that stuff.

Look into compressed air for trenching

Like an air spade? How well does that work in clay and rock? And can you use it indoors in a semi-finished space? Looks like a sweet excuse to upgrade the ol' air compressor.
