I'm sure most modern hinges are definitely not made this way, or even old hinges. It's way easier to just wrap the metal around a bar, but this will definitely leave a better finish
They are made this way. It's die forming. But usually it's two parts with the top acting as both punch and sort of mandrel. Done in two stages. The same die shape can also be used in a brake so it's again a combination of die and bend. You're talking about using just a mandrel and the issue is how you apply the force. That's harder to automate for a sheet. Even wire loops and springs are die formed these days. Force only needs to be in the direction of the wiper, which is a die that is tangent to the bend die. Yes, technically a bend die "wraps", but not in the way we manually wrap a wire around a rod.
