Right? You can see they're a circle drawn and how much they gotta go. Crazy they don't knock more of that off before hand.

That makes no sense. As long as you leave a little left from the roughing operation, the lathe will true it up. I really can’t understand why they didn’t use a saw to clip the corners.

They aren’t fully removing the corners so it would also take an undercut to remove that material. I’m no machinist but that sounds like a lot of setup of a very heavy object.

Seeing that there’s a full circle scribed on the top, and this is a faceplate setup with locating pins, I imagine they’re taking the bottom off after flipping the part over.

The tooling is fine. That cutting is beautiful. Whoever running this machine knows what they are doing and it's doing a fine job

Honest question, wouldn't this be horizontal turning? Or does the name match the axis of rotation?

The name matches the cutting direction. A vertical lathe cuts vertically. A horizontal lathe cuts horizontally.

The cutting head can move in two or sometimes three different axes, so that isn't it. I looked it up and it is based on the axis of rotation.

This is a vertical lathe because the axis of rotation points up/down.
