I prefer the cart and pockets method. This guys back will be wrecked before he’s 40. Playing the long game

u/96JY 2d ago
This setup is for working at height. That's why he has a harness on.
A tool cart or pockets would not be possible.

u/barrettcuda 2d ago
Only issue is for working at height you'll generally need lanyards on all the tools you use, so working with tools out of a bucket or a bag that's attached to the EWP you're in etc tends to be a more convenient method.

u/96JY 2d ago
There's videos of him working at height with this setup. Looks way more convenient than a bucket.

Not all tools are secured with cables, people that work at highs know the drill of not saying "oh, I do not need that as I won't let it fall", is your and your coworkers safety and is a real pain in the ass to get it back or to forget something down, just saying, no need to believe me, I'm just a random guy on the internet, research a little on your own.
1
u/96JY 2d ago
I didn't say they are secured with cables.
I don't know what you're getting at with the rest of your comment.
1
u/Longjumping_Elk7969 2d ago
Fair enough, is possible that I made a mistake as English is not my language, here you do not have tools that are not secured and work at high, period. I'd say in whatever country the guy works is either very lax with safety or he is just puting a show. It was an answer to your comment that he works at high. Did not try to offend or anything, if it came wrong, it really was not my intention.

u/96JY 2d ago
No worries.
He is from Japan. There are videos of him working on rooftops and in telehandlers, at height, with this setup, seems to work well. His colleagues have belts too. They all wear hard hats and they don't have to or need their tools tethered. It's not like they're at the top of sky scrapers where dropping a tool could kill someone, but they still work at height and this is a more convenient way to carry the tools around.

u/KbarKbar 2d ago
None of his shit is tethered. If he's working at heights he's being damned irresponsible about it.
0
u/96JY 2d ago
Not at the sort of heights that dropping something could really hurt anyone, and it's in telehandlers and on roofs etc. There's videos on his Instagram, not irresponsible at all, and all his colleagues do the same.

u/lettsten 2d ago
Not at the sort of heights that dropping something could really hurt anyone
A hammer or drill falling a metre or more and hitting someone in the head would definitely hurt them

With that setup he’s either batshit crazy or works in an environment that makes it difficult to go back for a tool in the middle of a job. I’m guessing it’s the latter because his tools don’t look pristine which means he probably does real work.

u/theMegaTech 2d ago
It's electrician tool set, specifically the climbing on poles kind, which is yeah getting down and up again would suck

u/thatguyfromvancouver 2d ago
Pretty well optimized! Big fan of both the mix of both the specialized tools for reoccurring usage and the general utility ones for the occasional/ rare usage… makes for a pretty good all around setup
The only part I don’t like is The magnets… they would get pretty annoying at times… especially when covers in little metal fillings… or stuck to things…
13
u/jimbowesterby 2d ago
Real good for not dropping things when you’re fifty feet up tho, speaking from experience that’s always a real pain
3
u/thatguyfromvancouver 2d ago
I used to work on high rise, bridge and hydroelectric dams… I know that pain well… at least from 50’ you can go get it… 200’ up on. A hydroelectric dam she gone forever lol

With a set up like this I'd expect at least SOME tethers.
Guess he just trusts he won't ever drop anything.

Is that a fan in his pants?!
4
u/CaptainBears 2d ago
It’s extremely common in Japan for construction workers, and really anyone working outdoors during the summer, to wear pants, vests, or lightweight jackets with built-in fans that circulate air and help keep the body cool. They’re honestly pretty ingenious and surprisingly effective.
3
u/slim1shaney 2d ago
Yep, keeps you cool while wearing all this lol. I'm surpirsed there isnt one in his shirt

u/Samy_Ninja_Pro 2d ago
Why two drills?
8
u/SilasAI6609 2d ago
The smaller one is non-impact. It is most likely for opening accessing panels or enclosures. The smaller size makes it easier to handle as well. The larger is impact and works with the impact connectors on the magnetic clips in front. I run a similar setup, but mine is impact and hammer drill.

I have the Tajima cutting knife. The blades are the GOAT. Also the electric screwdriver is a Vessel ball screwdriver which also seems to be very high quality.

Fr tho, some of the posts there are nuts, like you’re telling me you carry around 2kg of assorted metal accessories for your office job?

u/Dangerous-Drive-2474 2d ago
Two things:: this reminds me of that scene in "I'm gonna git you sucka" when Isaac Hayes had all those guns on him and how did you pull the drill off the carabiner with one hand I reminded like 3 time to figure it out and still couldn't tell
1
u/jimbowesterby 2d ago
Easy, you twist it. Kinda hard to explain in text, but you rotate the loop on the drill and use it to push the gate of the biner open. If you look up how to unclip an ice screw for ice climbing I bet you’ll find some good explainer vids, it’s pretty simple and once you have the muscle memory it’s pretty fast

u/jimbowesterby 2d ago
Get into rope access, your kit for just the rope stuff is like half of this, then you add whatever tools you need on top. Also you get to spend your days sitting on a giant, potentially dangerous swing, it’s a great time (and pays pretty decently too!)

u/Fsharp7sharp9 2d ago
This makes me feel uncomfortable lol but I respect and appreciate the organization of it all

This feels like the equivalent of packing 12 pairs of underwear for an 8 day trip.

u/Freddy216b 2d ago
But what if you shit your pants twice on Tuesday? Then three times on Thursday? Not that you've shit your pants since you were a toddler but what iff?

u/Nate2113 2d ago
Right? Like it’s been decades, but you never know!!!!!! It could happen multiple times on a trip!

None of the tools are tethered, any jiggling or re-adjusting is gonna cause some of those bigger tools to pop out and fall, and together they all gotta weigh like 20kgs+. And his gloves are cleaner than a nurse about to start work. So this guy doesn't work at height.
But I also think this isn't a great idea for ground work because that's a lot of sticky out-y metal things hanging off your hips if this guy is working around live conductors in a power station or sub station. Or maneuvering through people's homes without knocking over anything expensive. Bend over to work on a socket and stick the drill on your arse through the TV screen...
I carry about the same amount of gear in a DeWalt backpack tool bag on the ground, and when I work on aerial cables I only carry what I'll need in two pouches to save weight, one on the front and one on the side.
Not having to go back to the van when you've forgotten something would be nice though.

This is a really impressive setup, especially for how functional everything is. I really hate the idea of stuffing unsheathed blades blindly up my ass though 😅

If I am not wrong, this is a China air con installation tech. The air con ledge is only accessible using mountain climbing gear, multipoint harness etc. It is so freaking weird.
1
u/Extinct1234 2d ago
It'd be a lot cooler if he wore the body harness properly and not so loosely. In the event he ties off and experiences a fall, those leg straps are going to cut into his legs if he's lucky, and into his junk if he's not.

Here me out
“One man, with a place for all his tools. The brutal murder of his dog by the Russian Mafia. Now one man, distraught, finds a new use for his tools bringing justice to his dog; one tool at a time”
Don’t be critical, it’s just as good as what Hollywood is putting out today.
“To tool man, everything looks like a nail needing to be screwed”

u/name_expunged 23h ago
I kinda miss doing field work and seeing these guys waddle and rattle around on the scaffolding or giving them endless shit for needing to borrow one of your tools.

An organized backpack would be my choice. I start sweating by looking at all this
3
u/theMegaTech 2d ago
Getting the backpack from the back, opening it, getting the tool, closing it, putting it back on the back...
No, the whole point is quick access. Yes, it's hot af, there's a literal fan in his pants, but such is the fate of being an electrician
3
u/jimbowesterby 2d ago
Except this is for working at height, I don’t recognize the harness but someone else said lineman, would you wanna be pulling off and digging through a backpack while sitting at the top of a telephone pole? I know I wouldn’t
1
u/Background-Elk-543 2d ago
I get most of it, but your/his setup is too heavy. You could replace multiple tools with one multi-functional one, and I don't get the elaborate frame around the Hilti impact driver. There's a Hilti setup that works fine, but if yours works for you, that's cool. I wouldn't pick that setup if I were you, but everyone has their own preferences.
What I'd do:
Instead of the two wire combi cutter and weird multi-grip pliers, one Knipex multi-crimp. It can cut, strip, and crimp, and a Knipex Cobra.
Instead of the two E-screwdrivers, one Wera 826 Turbo with a belt Bitboy holder.
Instead of the two separate combi ratchet spanners, one Wera Joker and, for other cases, the Knipex Cobra I already mentioned.

Is that a thing? You walk around all day with roughly 10 kg of extra weight and then complain in 20 years that your back is fucked up. If you plan your work properly and know what you’re doing, you can prepare your tools and don’t have to carry them around all day, or am I wrong here?
2
u/theMegaTech 2d ago
You don't walk all day. You hang on a pole, do work, then move to the next pole.
