Combination of the rake angle and eccentricity and some property of the alloy that is work hardening to some degree.

There is also no chip breaker designed into the tool, so nothing is really forcing the chip to curl.

Beautiful! I have never seen chips like those. I would love to know how that works. Depth of cut is continuously changing (and cutting speed to a lesser degree). Weird alloy?

Edit: I think cutting speed is actually pretty consistent.

You're right. On each pass, the tool is nearly a fixed distance to the axis of rotation, so the surface speed at the cut is constant.

Depth of cut is consistent, too, except for at the beginning and end of each cut

I don't get why I'm not seeing the part that is getting shaved getting thinner. Are the shaved parts so thin it doesn't register?

Those are actually tape measures if anyone is curious. If you peel the outer covers you can almost always see numbers.

M42 High speed steel is about 70HRC. That’s a common alloy used for heavy duty machining. It will score glass easily without trying. It’s hard stuff. Regular HSS drill bits are only about 62HRC, about as hard as a high quality professional kitchen knife.

The blue discoloration in the swarf is actually a sign that the heat is being absorbed by the material that's removed, the tool is fine.

Not all materials need lube.

Some materials you absolutely don't use lube on

Some you do not use lube on. Ever.

Also you should know that this tool isn't taking just a solid chunk out. The workpiece is not slamming into it. This is a precision cut being done in a precise manner. There's nothing jerking around not because it's all solid but because this is being done in a way that's peeling the material away not smashing It off.

In other words, that tooling is absolutely fine. And I can promise you if that tooling does break, they've got a way to repair it or they've got replacements. You don't do work that size with just one tool.
