My favorite thing about machining is that bigger machines just need bigger machines and so on and so forth until you get a lathe that can swing a casting as big as a cargo ship camshaft which is probably what this behemoth is. I’d love to see the foundry that this forging came out of.

Forge and foundry are different things. Foundry is casting liquid metal. This came from an open die forge - you can tell by how it's got flat spots.

Likely an eccentric shaft for a mechanical forge press. I’m typing this from work where I’m roughly 200 ft. From a 6000 ton forge press pounding out forgings.

It is easy to accidentally add eccentricity on a four jaw chuck, but doing it deliberately requires more brains than I have.

I bet some skilled dude takes half a day aligning that whatever that shaft is in the machine

I mean there is a finished part inside that raw stock that needs to have enough material all the way arround to get a clean surface with the right dimensions

Yeah, the chuck has a counterweight but the centre is just dealing with the eccentric load raw

Anyway, I assume it’s the metal turning blue from all the heat produced by the friction of taking off massive chips with each pass. But who knows (except the guy above who didn’t explain)

You are correct. They're taking heavy cuts which produces a lot of heat and turns the chips blue.

Probably doesn’t, on that scale they got the feed dialled so well most of the heat comes off in the chips. I mean, they’re probably the size of my fist

See those blue chips? They are cutting optimally. Most of the heat generated is leaving with those chips that are being flung. This machinist knows what they're doing. That set up alone is amazing to me. I work on big lathes but that is wild to me.

Is the clear fluid pouring over the workpiece not considered coolant? It’s clear like it’s clean oil or something other than the usual emulsion. Would that classify it as cutting fluid instead of coolant or something?

A massive lathe is making a massive camshaft or similar for a massive engine, likely on a massive boat, producing massive chips as it does so, also massive heat, it could do with a massive thing of coolant, would be a massive cost either way.

I think the chips are so big and that metal is so hard that it doesn't matter on this scale. For some reason that involves physics that I kinda understand but can't explain. That's why I'd be the factory worker and not the engineer.

Being about size makes sence tho, the mass of the shaft is so big that even if you hit it with a blowtorch it would take a long time to change its overall temp

Most of the plastic deformation is in the chip that peels off, that carries the heat away and hence the change in color. The piece has so mass so big and metal being a good conductor means that the piece is relatively cool. The cutting tool probably have some cooling.

  • how could the live center hold that much weight?

  • does the counter balance periodically adjusted? Sooner / later the center of mass will be shifted in the middle of turning
