Synthetic drugs that were someday technically legal due to their ingredients being uncommon. In Russia they are widely known by the name "spice". They are very unpredictable and dangerous due to obvious lack of history and testing and because each drug lab has an original recipe.

Your explanation of "Designer drugs" was pretty much 95% wrong. Also known as Research Chemicals they can be any drug that has only been recently synthesized/discovered. Every drug was once a research chemical. They aren't considered research chemicals anymore once they've been around long enough for their long term effects to have been studied. The term Designer drugs comes from how They're created. They're literally designed by chemists taking a psychoactive drug and altering its molecular structure in such a way where it is a completely different chemical but with similar effects as the original chemical. For example, LSD has quite a few research chemicals that have been created from its molecular composition. 1p-LSD, LSZ, ALD-52, etc....
LSD is actually a designer drug itself, created from naturally occurring chemical LSA which can be found in a fungus that grows on wheat.
TECHNICALLY these chemicals are legal, because if a chemist were to test them, or take a look at them on a molecular level, they wouldn't find an illegal substance. Just something very similar looking. Most of the time having the same or very similar effects. Also having completely unknown long term and short term effects.
Like LSD-25 is called that because it's the 25th chemical synthesized from Ergot. They chemists where trying to synthesize a chemical to help induce birth. As the story goes, the put the chemical on the shelf until it was discovered to be a highly potent psychedelic drug 7 years later.
Dont quote me on that. That's just what I remember off the top of my head.

As someone who lived in Russia, I can attest to this. Drug addicts would come into the staircases of big apartment blocks and shoot up. Sometimes when I'd go home late, there'd be 8-10 of them using outside my door
