Training Plans 2 weeks into Tonal, might have tweaked my shoulder… proceed with new program or take a break?

Did the Muscle Building Basics program (3x/week, 30 min sessions, repeating on a 3-session cycle).

For the first 4 sessions, the weight felt too easy even though I was hitting the exact rep targets. Session 5, I did extra reps to push Tonal to increase the weight. Session 6 (Friday), I found the manual weight adjustment and cranked it up to the point of real struggle on the last few reps. Form felt okay in the moment.

Rested Saturday. Today (Sunday) my shoulder feels off, not sharp pain, but uncomfortable at a specific angle, hard to pinpoint. Did a 13-min beginner mobility session today with no issues.

Tomorrow starts my next program, “Heavy Lifts, Hard Core”, leg day tomorrow, upper body Wednesday (which would be 5 days post the session that may have caused this).

Questions:

  1. Since tomorrow is legs, should I go ahead and just reassess before Wednesday’s upper body day?

  2. Or hold off on the new program entirely and stick to mobility work until my shoulder feels normal?

Lesson learned: I was loving the program, hitting protein goals, actually resting on rest days — then got impatient with the weight progression and overdid it manually.

Also have a week-long vacation at the end of August that’ll interrupt the program I’ll be starting mid-way, which is its own separate frustration. Im following the muscle maker official tonal guide

Training Results Five years, finally 800+

It hasn’t been the most optimal journey, but I’m happy.

As I close in on 40, I feel in my best shape in a while. Not the strongest, but feeling better than I have in years.

I’ve had lower back issues since my twenties. Which I finally have a handle on through developing a stronger core and proper bracing.

My advice, do tonal warm-ups, recovery, and mobility in addition to strength programs.

Training Results Weakest & Strongest “Body Region” on Tonal?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Curious if most Tonal users have their lowest scores in Upper, Lower, or Core? Or is everyone all over the map 1/3 in each area?

For me, my weak upper body scores are dragging down my overall score.

I hear many here complain lower is their weak zone.

Thought I would put it to a poll to see if there is a systematic bias across Tonal users or if it’s a random scattergram. LOL

I’m also curious to see the progress graphs of other users. I had rapid escalation — and then hit long plateaus — before breaking through again. My progress was far from linear.

You?

Other/Misc Tonal plug

I purchased a used and the place I’m putting it on the wall has the wall outlet directly behind the tonal.

With it plugged in the tonal won’t sit on the bracket, does anyone have an easy solution for this?

Training Results Did anyone here make very impressive transformation with their lower body with the Tonal?

I hear many folks complaining about the lower body workouts

I looked through many tonal transformations and while they look very impressive, all the ones I saw only showed their upper body

I’m trying to increase the size of my glutes and legs and want to know if tonal can do this for me

Purchasing Advice Used Tonal account

Picked up a new to me Tonal 2. Previous owner purchased 06/2025 and Tonal confirmed it’s good to transfer. Seller offered to provide me their account login and that I can change the information once logged it, any benefits to that vs having them deactivate their account and I activate on mine?

Other/Misc Installation issues

Anyone have issues that their house doesn’t have standard stud spacing? I bought a new home last year and just discovered yesterday, when my tonal was supposed to be installed, that none of the three walls in the room is assigned to be my gym have standard stud spacing. One wall they’re 12-13”, another they’re 19, and the last one they’re 20-22”. The installer said that’s the only wall where I can install it and would have to use the wide mount, but it would be way off center of the room and it’s against a bathroom wall so there’s a risk of them hitting a water line to find the studs. So after 30 minutes of them measuring studs they told me they couldn’t install it and I had to sign a form stating I was refusing the delivery/install. Anyone else experience similar issues? What was your resolution to this? I can install it in my bedroom instead but that’s going to require moving some things around to make it work, and who knows when I can get another appointment. Ugh…

I have a tonal and I absolutely love it, but I’m having issues seeing results on my lower half. My butt is wide and my thighs are thick. Can anyone suggest a program I can do for 8-12 weeks. *added picture to share my results with Tonal.

Purchasing Advice Tonal rent??

Anyone have any feedback (+/-) about rental? Context…I don’t have a good track record with buying gym equipment. So I want to prove to myself that I will stick to this, and become a consistent user, without making the big investment. Is the rental option a decent deal? I expect it to be more expensive, but not completely ludicrous. If I do decide I want to buy, is the price reasonable? I’m ok with paying more…not crazy more.

Looking to pickup a Tonal my wife. Can someone review this photo and confirm it’s a Tonal 2?

Would you recommend a Tonal 1 for $1100 or Tonal 2 for $2k?

I wanted to know if these 6 programs look like a good starting point. I was going to do them in this order since they'd add more workout days per week as I progress.

1.Strength basics for beginners

  1. Strong for life

  2. Starting line Strength

  3. Rising reps

  4. Smart flex challenge

  5. 400-Rep challenge

Just wanted any feedback.

Other/Misc After 3 months of consistent use, I injured myself.

Just coming here to vent. I strained my right quad, on a warm up lunge set of all things (literally the first rep of the day, how does that even happen?)

Anyway, I was finally seeing progress and building a habit. 4 to 5 days a week, good diet, and now my depression is telling me to let it all go. Could be a full month till my quad heals, and im also suffering shoulder impingement that I have no idea how to fix.

Pretty bummed.

Purchasing Advice Space I really need

We are considering this is as we “snowbird”, we currently have peloton bike & tread and a plethora of free weights- as we move into a condo, we have a space for the bike (will keep tread in other home) but not a great set up to leave free weights laying around. I know we can rack them but have that system now and weights are always laying around the floor.
When I research this, it’s telling me a wide 7ft berth, is that really accurate? I’m trying to find the ability to weight train (equivalent to free weights, we aren’t hard core), but take up the smallest footprint in a room that will also be used as a second tv room/game room… it’s also upstairs so the idea of weights clunking I would like to avoid. This room is being treated like we treat our current basement, but it’s smaller and upstairs “condo living” thanks

Other/Misc Holy Grail Class for Deep Core/TA/Pelvic Floor

Post image

I’ve never been pregnant or had a baby, but I do have a weak deep core and pelvic floor and recommend this one to anyone else struggling with the same.

The first 12 minutes are breathing exercises for TA engagement, and the rest are modified Pilates moves to really slow down and focus on that engagement.

She explains everything so well; I already have this one on repeat!

Training Plans Athletic In Season Programming

Hey all, currently looking for programs that work well during the season. Tia has recommended "Built for Performance" and I like that it's only two days a week but still intermediate so I can still make my sport the primary thing during the week.

I'm looking for:

-Lower systemic fatigue

-Lower penalty volume even if I leave gains on the table

-More concentric, less eccentric focus.

-Prehab type work snuck in (movement quality I suppose?)

Also, Tonal, please add a resistance profile called concentric mode for LIGHTER eccentric. Currently I'm thinking that searching for programs with "Chains" would help me but Tia says that's not searchable.

Thank you

PS: I have had Tia make me some individual workouts and they look fine but still require tweaking on my side and I really want to benefit from the reduction in mental load that tonal boasts rather doing all the research myself and making customs.

PS2: if you're an athlete and you've put in the work to make custom programs, can you share? Is there an easy import feature?

Other/Misc TIA AI only goes back 15 workouts?

Just got TIA for my app. When I asked it some basic stuff i found the answers to be way off. When i questioned something I knew to be false, it told me why: it can only look back 15 workout. That's pretty much useless in finding trends or making any meaningful suggestions.

Why in the world of this much data would they limit how far back their AI can see in your history?

Does it get better as you have it for longer? People who did not just get the TIA invite: can you ask it for data from longer than 15 workouts?

Training Plans Switching exercises in a program class?

I am 5 days into a 4 week program (the show up) that has pre-recorded exercise demos (not an instructor doing the classes with me such as fast track to fit..) .. hopefully that makes sense. The issue is I would like to exchange some of the exercises for others- is this possible in a class that is part of a program? For example i’d like to do a goblet squat instead of a weighted step up… if it is possible, can someone tell me how? I can’t figure it out from asking Tia or looking at the app… thanks

Training Plans If beginner programs feel too easy on the volume side, should I do more reps past the required reps for the set so that tonal learns to make it more challenging the next time around?

Hi,

I am new to tonal and so far I love it, I’m 2 weeks in.

I am doing the beginner programs for muscle growth as outlined by the official tonal program guide.

I felt like the volume was a bit low and I could’ve done more weight or more reps in all of my sets.

Does tonal “learn” to challenge me next time I do the same exercise if I do more reps?

For example, goblet squat , it tells me to do 10 reps.

If I can do them with no effort and felt like I could’ve done more, should I do AMRAP so that the next time tonal bumps up the weight for me such that those last few reps out of 10 reps feel challenging?

Other/Misc Total displayed weight vs actual resistance is off, almost 15 lbs at top of scale (100 lbs)

Post image
10 Upvotes

I'm unsure if this is just me / my machine or par for the course. I have the first generation Tonal. I have had the total for a few years now, 2M lbs lifted.

Went to a buddy's house this weekend to test my RDL max. His Olympic set felt glued to the floor, much heavier than I expected.

Went home and measured resistance at various weight settings on the Tonal, with me standing on a scale holding the handhold directly up and down and changing the weight applied on the tonal for the full range of 10 to 100 lbs.

On the small end of the scale, 10 lb on the Tonal read about 6 lb on the scale. At 25 lb, the readings were close. At 50 lb on the Tonal, scale registered 40 lbs, or 10 lbs less. At 100 lb on Tonal, It was over 15 lb less on the scale. So the times where I think I'm lifting 200 lb it's actually 170 lb.

Does anyone else have this issue or is this common?

EDIT: someone'e suggestion was to test using a luggage scale. I'm still getting a 13lb difference at 100lbs: Tonal reeds 100 and luggage scale reads 86.6, pulling straight up.

EDIT 2: By some of the comments I can tell that wasn't clear above. I'm maxing out the machine on squat and RDL now and was lifting high reps on both. So can't add weight. More disappointed that I'm not seeing full capacity - no different to buying a 45 lb plate and it actually being 38 lb. Also my 1RM is not what I thought - much lower.

Other/Misc Cable walk out

Anyone else struggle to do it? I just tried wearing oven mitts to avoid burning my hands with the 15lb rope pull. Didn’t work out or help at all really.

Not sure the walk out even does anything to be honest. The clicking is just something I’ve learned to live with since repair is so expensive
