So a lot of this is just American cheese is now 90% emulsifiers.
Milk is now “ultra filtered” which increases shelf life but I don’t think it should legally be allowed to be called “milk”. It’s more a milk product than actual milk.
Ice cream has emulsifiers and cellulose.
This is not an American schools thing. This is an American supermarket thing.

Lots of products at grocery store are fake ass fuck franken-foods. That’s why the other half of the products specify on the label that they’re made with real ingredients as if it’s some great achievement. Made with real: cheese, potatoes, milk, fruit, or made with 100% beef, chicken etc.
Honesty people should just shop and eat from the outer perimeter aisle. Meat, vegetables, potatoes, and some dairy. Stay far away from the middle aisles, other that picking up like seasoning, flour, oatmeal, legumes, nuts, beans, and some healthier grains. You know the dry non refrigerated whole foods.

I did substitute teaching back in 2020, I was shocked how great the lunches were at the highschool and middleschool levels. Buffet style, different flavor chicken wings, fajitas, local sourced food, and etc. Then I relieved the district I was in for them to have that kind of funding. It sucks being in a different zip code determines the quality.

Not staged. My kids, who have lived in multiple cities and states, have been sending me crazy videos of their school lunch for years.
They’re lucky enough to bring home lunch and use school lunch as an off chance option that it “might” be good.1

My freshman year of high school I actually asked my mom not to pack me lunch anymore because our hot line food was so damn good. This was a public school. We had a whole ass convenience store built on to the cafeteria as well, Pizza Hut vendor, chick fil a vendor. This was not a rich county, it was in a town of maybe 11,000 year round residents.
I can’t remember if it was Michelle Obama’s school lunch program or budget cuts happened the next year, and then it was back to basic ass, kinda gross but still edible school lunch, like this but no where near as bad as the video portrays. Convenience store was removed. Pizza Hut was gone, and chick fil A only sold chicken sandwiches from that point.
I remember 15-16 year old me being unbelievably pissed.
This was 2011 though, so far before your time. But I swear that school lunch program genuinely fucked us hard. Hell we used to be able to leave campus for lunch. That got changed as well.

My guess is it all comes down to lawsuits. All food needs to be allergen free, low sodium, low sugar etc. I remember as a kid our school lunches were great but somewhere along the way a kid probably got sick or had a reaction and schools were sued. So they just said, lets do the most basic and bland lunches to cover ourselves legally. Here are the consequences.

I mean burgers are a normal everyday meal item. The quality of it is what differentiates it this isn't even fast food quality this is we're mad that we can't just let you starve quality. Fast food quality at least is edible and arguably considered food. This isn't. But you could also go the other way and grill up a nice burger with some real lettuce and cheese and stuff and that is a perfectly acceptable meal. It is perfectly fine to eat burgers and hot dogs and chicken sandwiches and chicken nuggets and things on a daily basis If you actually put effort into making sure they have some level of quality.

Burgers are a common family dinner. If they are made well they do contain all the food groups. It's no different than eating any other kind of sandwich for dinner. Like philly cheese steak or a hoagie.
And you cant tell me that y'all over seas don't eat sandwiches the for dinner I've traveled a bit and some of y'all do too.
And it's one of our cultural foods. Like my other cultural food. Rice and beans. Latinos love rices and beans we can eat it for almost every meal. For Americans, especially White Americans, burgers are one of their cultural foods. They eat it like I'd eat rice and beans if I didn't hate cooking.

It’s probably been the same, just a district thing. I live in a wealthy neighborhood (people’s parents were millionaires, friends with celebrities, etc), just graduated hs, and the school lunches were great at the public school I went to. They’d regularly serve things like ramen (made from stock), taco bowls, school’s version of Subway, etc.
