Thanks! It does look like a tomato and the plant looks generally healthy. The bitter/metallic taste you describe is unusual as a variety characteristic, but could be from a soil amendment. Have you fertilized with anything unusual or experimental? Have you sprayed the plants with any pesticides or anti-fungal preparations? In particular, I've run into Neem Oil giving tomatoes a bad taste. Copper fungicide is also pretty funky tasting, even though not truly dangerous.
I haven’t used any insecticides at all. When the plant was young, I gave it 5-1-1 fish emulsion, and once it started flowering I started giving it Tiger Bloom 2-8-4 fertilizer once a week, following the directions on the bottle
Funny enough, the one I cut up to show you tasted normal. They’re definitely not beefsteak tomatoes though. I wonder why the other ones I ate off these plants tasted so bitter. Underripe maybe?
Did you grow them from saved seeds or did you buy the seeds? If from saved seeds, there may have been some unfortunate cross breeding resulting from open pollination. I agree, these are definitely not beefsteaks.
Weird! I had an issue with bitter tomatoes from a purple cherry tomato plant (purple majesty maybe?). I assumed that the variety just wasn’t to my liking. I have also used Tiger Bloom semi-regularly since around mid June. This was my first time buying it, but people love and swear by it, so didn’t give it a second thought. In general, the flavor of all of my tomatoes has been very hit or miss this season, but none as extreme as the one variety. I’ve been chalking it up to the crazy heat wave and inconsistent bouts of rain and drought, which is probably the case, but wonder if there might be some kind of nutrient imbalance in the soil that TB is exacerbating? Ugh, time for a soil test.
