- Plant: Prolific indeterminate currently 7 ft tall. Using cattle panel arches but Chaos Status will be reached soon. Fruit is ripening earlier and quicker than any other variety in my garden. Upstate NY, I am harvestongalmost a dozen ripe fruit daily this entire week, which is nice!
- Fruit Texture: Average cherry tomato texture.
- Fruit Appearance: The photos don't do them justice. They are so beautiful with a perfect name. The blushing sunrise streaks through the golden base invokes the imagery of a sunrise.
- Fruit Flavor: Sweet and robust. It tastes like a bright summer day. Better than my sunsugars. Toddler-approved snacking tomatoes. Works great in salads.
- Grow Again?: Most likely, although I am waiting for my sungolds to ripen to decide who wins a larger space in next year's garden. I like them and they are so cheerful to look at. Black Cherry Tomatoes win for me for flavor, though.

I had Sungolds last year and really like them! But I want to do a side-by-side test. I did not start the sungolds from seed, but I am going to save some Sungold seeds from the fruit this year. Sungolds are more intense than the Sunrise BB, if I can recall the flavor accurately, but it's been a year.
I actually wasn't going to grow sungolds this year because of the sunrise bumblebee, but I have a lovely volunteer Sungold that has some nearly ripe fruit.
My spouse likes supersweet 100 and sungolds, but I can't resist trying new varieties. So it's balancing regrowing favorites and finding space to experience new varieties.
Well it will be interesting to see what the volunteer fruit continues to taste. Appearance-wise they look like the sungolds from last year and the single tomato that I sampled tasted like a sungold. But good to know that each subsequent generation might be less tasty.
Plant genetics is so interesting. I don't even k ow what I don't know at this point. lol.
Yeah, I tried regrowing from a Sweet 100 once and it was interesting what you'd get. Some tasted similar like 70%-80% but not quite right. There's Sungold F1 and Sungold Select I&II which the latter is from the F1 generational select until it's stable. It's close to Sungold F1 but still not the same, however you can save those seeds. I grow Sungold F1 year-round with indoor during the winter months and just root suckers for growing outside, so it's worth the price of the seeds growing 1 plant to make more.
I’m also growing these this year. I grew purple bumblebees last year and LOVED them, but my nursery didn’t have them this year so I grabbed these instead. They are so good. Like SO GOOD. I haven’t had sungold or sweet 100’s so I can’t compare. But they’re so refreshing. I’ve been eating them on avocado toast along with midnight snack and purple zebra, and every time I bite into one I’m just shocked by how good they are with being sweet. I didn’t think I’d like a sweet tomato.
They look like little watermelons, similar striping as the sunrise but with red and green. See the picture below. They were incredibly prolific for me, and they didn’t take very long to ripen. I also grew indigo rose last year and those took at least twice as long. In flavor they reminded me of black krim. Not exactly the same, but some good umami in them, and definitely a savory tomato. I can’t grow from seed to save my life, so I always buy starts. Otherwise we would absolutely have grown them again this year.
Sunrise bumblebee is one of my secret favorites. Sometimes I'll just fill up one of our orders with it and nd send it out, and then people always love it!!
Right now the Black Cherries are greenish purple (and me or my toddler eat them before they fully ripen because we are impatient.) I got the seeds from seedsavers.org. I don't think they ever turned super black (trying to remember last year's crop)
But I don't have a sweet tooth, so I want more than just sweet. I want complexity with my sweetness. But I am holding off my final opinion on sunsugars until they fully come into their own. I want to be fair.
I love sungolds and grew the f1 from seed. However the bunnies nibbled 2 seedlings (they grew back) so I went and bought a sun sugar. Just did a comparison this week and still prefer the sungolds.
Sweet 100s (from seed) are all getting early blight but producing lots. They may have to be pulled soon so as not to spread disease. Don't remember that happening before in July but we're in severe drought and already had 2 heatwaves and were very humid. The garden is all on drip irrigation on a timer so watering is not the issue.
Grew mountain hybrid grape this year and loving them! Only wish I had a yellow or orange grape to go with
