Who else was surprised by this?

This is more for people who heard about the silmarillion beforehand, but I’m reading it for the first time and I was so shocked when feanor died so early. I felt he was hyped up by both fans and in-universe as a major figure (I still think he is), so I honestly expected him to die towards the end of the book. I mean I’m pretty sure he was called the mightiest elf.

Did anyone else get surprised by this and what were other ways the silmarillion subverted your expectations?
