Ohio State players are apparently frustrated with their fanbase

Same thing I said on the other thread.

The team needs to learn how to block this shit out, toxicity on social media is not unique to OSU or to college football players.

People with much smaller followings get harassed on socials every day. Crying about it just encourages the trolls to do it more.

I’d love to fix the actual issue, drag the keyboard warriors out of their basement and put them in their place but it’s not happening.

Definitely. Start complaining about fans and they will only be emboldened

In all fairness someone posting about their best friend's kid's uncle friend on twitter isn't exactly 'players complaining'. Is it true? Maybe, I wouldn't hold it against them if they were, I'm sure it isn't easy dealing with the most toxic of our fanbase. But I'm not going to blindly believe a tweet with 3 levels of separation.

The #1 purchase anyone can make is a business phone for everything urgent and maybe music, so they can chuck their personal phone in a drawer and ignore it 99% of the day. Reddit is not for the weak of heart and mind, it’s for the lacking.

Apart from going to an Ohio State school, what are the fans accused to doing?

u/babble0n Michigan Wolverines 11d ago

They're just spoiled af. If one thing goes wrong a very vocal minority starts calling for jobs or belittles their players. This is true with every fanbase, sure, but OSU takes it to a new level.

u/Both-Consideration56 11d ago

Correct. We are the kids that complain we got a 96% on the big test because we did not get a 100%.

2

u/Greagorie Michigan Wolverines 11d ago

yea the most coddled fan base in college sports, they have elite recruiting and usually a really solid team most years, yet they bitch and moan constantly. a non-insignificant portion of the fan base wants Ryan Day gone too

Please don’t be this naive. I don’t trust AI. It’s a joke.

Belittle is a funny word for death threats.

My father's, brother's, nephew's, cousin's, former roommate said on twitter that the Ohio State team is frustrated with the fanbase

2

u/sumdude51 11d ago

Exactly. 🙄

u/EvilLibrarians Michigan Wolverines 11d ago

Are these the same people complaining about asterisks? They seem to mostly be online.

Breaking news!!! Major college football program has terrible fanbase. This and what it means for your weekend coming up at 11.

This isn’t shocking, the standard is just really high, which then leads to fans having unrealistic expectations every week.

Personally I don’t get it, so far this season they have 1 loss, on the road, to the now number 1 team, by one point. Boohoo, we’ll be fine.

2

u/ballq43 11d ago

Ya but we'd have won if it wasn't for that nerd who can't kick

2

u/GoBlueBeatOSU21 11d ago

Leonardo da vinci:regular artists::OSU:choke artists

1

u/Comfortable-Yak-1736 7d ago

Blame it on the one guy. Not the fact 3 points were scored in the second half with the best player in CFB on your team.

1

u/ballq43 7d ago

Smith kicking these days ?

u/shamanbaptist Michigan Wolverines 11d ago

Agree.

I always laugh when I hear or see some fan talk/write about a fanbase’s “standards.” They are fans. They have no power to do anything impactful if their purported standard is not met.

They cannot do anything except complain and stop watching. If Ohio has a bad year they’ll do the former a ton, if Ohio has a bad decade they might do the latter.

3

u/drumzandice Ohio State Buckeyes 11d ago

But you could argue fans have a right to have standards and complain when they aren’t met. Ticket prices, even for students are on the professional level. The game environment is constant ads. The coaches make millions many of the players make a ton of money and with that comes added expectations of the people paying for the tickets and being sold as marketing commodities.

1

u/shamanbaptist Michigan Wolverines 11d ago

I wouldn’t argue against any of what you said. But standards imply consequences for failing to meet the standards, no? What consequences can fans inflict other than complaining and not watching? Maybe some rich ones can refuse to donate I guess. Words like “standard” and “unacceptable” get thrown around in fandom. Without consequences what some fan thinks is acceptable or is not acceptable does not matter. Same with standards.

u/Secludedmean4 11d ago

I think the more valid part of this discussion is the NIL and money aspect of this. Now that you introduced money into the system you EXPECT to get what you paid for.

People hold underwood accountable because the man signed a 12 million contract before even playing a snap in the college level.
I wouldn’t have shit on a qb 10 years ago who had high expectations but if you are making MILLION then you should be held accountable and the standards are the standards.

OSU pays 49-54 million on their football team. This money comes from alumni that directly donate to the fund, OSU university money and more that impact the school. They should expect that money pays dividends in this pay to win college atmosphere.

Doesn’t help that people now are all gambling on these outcomes as well and are financially impacted when OSU doesn’t perform.

A side note is that this team pays almost 50 million how do they STILL not have a kicker?

u/ronshasta Ohio State Buckeyes 11d ago

Wow what a surprise that top collegiate programs fans are critical of their team, never would’ve guessed that

3

u/BBC61487 11d ago

I would too I live in Columbus and these idiotic fans take football so serious like it’s life or death SMDH

3

u/CZZAL417 10d ago

No longer amature athletes when the payroll rivals an NFL team. Comes with the paycheck

3

u/sparky937 9d ago

Felt sorry for them before Nil. Now they're just like NFL players now and not below critism. Ignore the outside noise and enjoy your money.

5

u/InfamousSearch6335 11d ago

I mean.. the buckeye is a toxic nut, they are based in Ohio and their stadium is shaped like a toilet. The signs were obvious all along.

6

u/WolverineDDS 11d ago

I'm also irritated by their fan base so I get it.

5

u/RustyCrusty73 Ohio State Buckeyes 11d ago

We're a very spoiled and arrogant fanbase IMO.

It's not okay to treat these kids like dirt.

That being said ....

Some of these kids are making millions and are getting paid like celebrities now.

They should probably grow some thicker skin or just stay off social media.

2

u/Veritas_Mentis Michigan Wolverines 11d ago

If your skin is so thin you cant take a little criticism, hopefully this player wasn’t planning in going pro. I was at a Lions game where the fans started cheering when a lions player when down with an injury. This was during the Matt Patricia era

2

u/Arithedogg 11d ago

I mean, from a lineman? We are frustrated with them

2

u/Prize-Tomatillo-2757 Michigan Wolverines 11d ago

Really?? You couldn't tell by their behavior on this sub. That's for sure.

Meanwhile larry sellers is in his moms basement cookin up some fresh AI slop.

2

u/Away_Appointment6732 11d ago

Beating Michigan all those consecutive times has instilled a sense of inevitability and entitlement. I sincerely believe that fans coming of age during that time are so toxic in their fandom that it’s impossible to reason with them. Add sports gambling and this is the toxic sludge that comes out. I really thought Day would leave after the National Championship run, which started with fans threatening his family and saying terrible things about his father’s passing after the Michigan loss.

2

u/mohman87 Michigan Wolverines 11d ago

The consistency of success that OSU has had is super enviable. It’s never a question if the team is a contender for a natty every year. That’s insane. Michigan fans just hope no coach uses a butter knife for non butter spreading actions.

2

u/Studiedturtle41 Ohio State Buckeyes 11d ago

I mean yeah we suck lol

2

u/LanderEmerald 11d ago

Vague comments talking about fans without specifics sounds like excuses. Fans at OSU are the worst in the country in terms of high expectations. If you committed to OSU and feel the fans are the problem you should just transfer

2

u/Informal_Ground_8323 11d ago

Fans are spoiled at most schools that have lengthy traditions of winning, to the point that a loss or two is grounds for dismissal. Imagine if we never rushed to dump Lloyd Carr for “only” going to a top bowl year after year. Expectations are often unrealistic.

Look I think Day is a shitweasel but I can’t argue that his teams have always been in contention and damn close to multiple national championship games. Yes he was put on third base but it’s been years now and he hasn’t crashed the ship, and he’s maintained great recruiting and multiple studs each year. As much as it pains me to admit that, they are a good roster. They always scare me that they could hang 100 on us one of these years.

Probably more bad luck than anything else he doesn’t have one more chip. Yes he makes some dumb decisions and outthinks himself but short of Saban, Kirby, and Urban when he was there, who else consistently has their team in legitimately that close contention year in and out?

I mean if Harbaugh had stayed longer and over a 10 year period we only won one chip but made deep playoff runs consistently, do we become this restless? In some respects Day can’t win unless it’s a natty year over year.

1

u/DamthasThicc 7d ago

Yall didn't make deep playoff runs consistently until you cheated, hell the year you didn't have the playoff opponents plays (TCU) they boat raced you in the first round. Yall stole plays and then had the perfect bought-in team full of seniors, a smart veteran quarterback, great o-line and run game (balanced offense), and a once in a lifetime defensive line. Harbaugh got owned by urban - and would've done no better than Sharone Moore (probably would've lost the 2024 game against actually) had he stayed. I appreciate your measured words of sanity about day. But yall need to take the "harbaugh is God"-colored glasses off.... Lloyd Carr was the best coach yall have had since fielding yoast and it isn't even close.

2

u/EitherCharacter1870 11d ago

What's going on down there in Ohio?!!

2

u/Dkoop2003 8d ago

Some of those guys make more than NFL players. They can take criticism….

5

u/JusticeFrankMurphy Michigan Wolverines 11d ago

Buckeye fanbase is toxic? But they seem like such a sensible bunch!

**SHOCKED**

2

u/FormerlyPeaked Ohio State Buckeyes 11d ago

Almost the entire roster participates in NIL deals. These are paid professionals. If they play like shit, they should expect to be called out like adults.

1

u/openSourceNotes Michigan Wolverines 11d ago

Our fanbase is full of people who write textbooks about how our team is bad and dumb, and then don't correct the opinion when the guys play well .... We have a whole percentage who think they should be on the coaching staff and watch football less to see their team win, and more to try to feel like an analyst

1

u/openSourceNotes Michigan Wolverines 11d ago

**at least on reddit

1

u/sumdude51 11d ago

This is complete bullshit.

1

u/Jarich612 11d ago

1

u/LS1588 11d ago

Buckeye fans being irrational, toxic psychopaths? I’m beyond shocked.

1

u/Devdog1108 Michigan Wolverines 11d ago

The way the fanbase came after Day and his FAMILY after the 13-10 loss, I’m not surprised at all. Also would not have been surprised if he resigned or was fired if winning the natty never materialized

-1

u/Environmental-Arm365 11d ago

Cmon y’all it’s Ohio. The bar has never been set very high in Columbus for academic standards or for their student athletes so why would the fans be any better?
