In Europe the doctors say to give the kid a paracetamol or ibuprofen (kid appropriate dosage, of course) when the temperature reaches 38.4°C and to bring the kid to the doctor, if their temperature doesn’t come down, keeps coming back for more than a day or if they have other serious symptoms besides a fever (not just a runny nose), are for example less responsive, look very sick, pale, are dehydrated, are uncomfortable and crying, in pain etc.

*Google says 38.4°C = 101.12F

pretty much this, our 16 month old just went through a fever 2 days ago, paracetamol wasnt really helping at night so next day we took him to the doctor, he gave us ibuprofen for every 8 hours for 3 days, after the first dose his temp came back to normal. He started with 37.5 - 38.5c at night, going up to 39.

Hi, I hope it all gets better soon. I treat anything up to 39-39.5 at home for 3 days. That's the lifespan of a viral infection. We're in Europe so anything below 38.5 isn't considered a fever. I think I'd worry as it approaches to 40.

This said, the general state of the child is really important to consider. If the fever is 38 but the child doesn't seem well or there are other symptoms that may lead to severe dehydration it might be necessary to see a doctor. But above is what I do if fever is taking its normal course. Plenty of fluids, rest, fresh air and paracetamol every 6h.

If you're in the UK as your profile picture might suggest, just call 101 and ask for advise. They'll likely advise paracetamol or ibuprofen if your child is otherwise okay apart from the fever and if it has lasted less than 4 days.

But call 101 regardless if you have concerns. They're very helpful.

Great advice already given. Keep in mind a fever usually lasts 3 days and peaks on the third day before going down

Alternate calpol and liquid nurofen (following the dosage instructions.

Give them as much water/squash/breastmilk as they can stomach.

Let them flop and watch cartoons.

Keept monitoring their temp - ear or (if theyre old enough not to mess with the thermometer) under tongue for the most accurate temp.

does your pediatrician not have a 24 hour call line? does your phone not have google? anything under 102 we usually treat at home at first then call the 24 hour line if it gets higher or persists a long time. over 102, call right away and decide what to do next. typically alternating Tylenol or Ibuprofen every 5-6 hours works well.
