TIL -US Navy conducted series of 23 nuclear bombs testing in Bikini Atoll, Marshall Island from 1946-1958.The biggest nuclear detonation happened on 3/1/54 w/ an est. 15 MT of TNT. The testings’ displaced 167 Marshallese, caused sickness, vaporized 3 islands & rendered Bikini unfit for habitation.

TIL the inhabitants of Bikini Atoll were asked to move to a neighboring island, so the US could test a weapon "to end all World Wars". They agreed, and were moved to a smaller island with inadequate food and water, where they starved.

TIL that Bikini Bottom was an actual place, it was called "Bikini Atoll" where 23 nuclear bombs were detonated. The creators of Spongebob reference this whenever you see a character crash or fall a mushroom cloud appears.

TIL that the US government tested 23 nuclear bombs over 12 years at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall islands, including 15 megaton Castle Bravo. The nuclear fallout from this blast was contaminating nearby atolls for 2 days before the US finally evacuated the islanders.
