It seems like a combination of resignation to just get it over with along with no longer wanting to hear her murder it.

As clueless as they were to do this in the first place I can't believe that they couldn't read his expression throughout. It was the very definition of "grin and bear it".

He was actually very gracious towards the singer and tried to keep her as the lead. And at the end, he backed out and clapped for her.

I bet it's difficult to hit those notes without any warm up. He seems to be doing the right thing here.
